How can I trace the Coulston Family of Mitchellgate Kirkby Lonsdale further back
than 1841 and was it normal not to have house numbers on Census?

Hi Pancho, My family come from the same area you are looking at.  I've manages to go back a few generations with my research:
                     Jeff Coulston (me b.1948)
                     Jeffrey Valentine Coulston (my father b.1928)
                     Edward Coulston (grandfather b.1901)
                     James Coulston (g grandfather b.1856)
                     Martha Coulston (gg aunt - James' mother b. 1832, father not registered)
                     James Coulston  (ggg uncle - Martha's father b.1800)
                     Thomas Coulston (gggg uncle - James' father b. 1773)
                     James Coulston ( ggggg uncle - Thomas' father b. ?)
This is as far as I've got with this branch of my family tree.  I've got lots of info about siblings for everyone listed up to Martha Coulston, and a little info on some of the other ancestors listed (and I'm still looking). James Coulston, Martha's father and her mother - Annes Hardiker b.1799 - lived in Kirkby Lonsdale in a road named Mitchel Gate (or Mitchelgate), and USUALLY the census have house numbers.  I don't know why theirs should be missing; might be worth a bit of research.
