William THOMPSON - Born County Durham England
« on: Friday 17 April 09 13:31 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone,

I am hoping that some one can help me to help out a friend dads who is in England.  I have copied the belly of his email;

His Dads version.
William Thompson was born about 1887 at Coxhoe, Durham, County Durham, England. His father was John Thompson and Mary Ann Blunt. He was a coal miner but somehow got himself in the army and served in the First World War 1914-18. When he came home he could not get on with his wife and left for Oz shortly afterwards with his fancy woman (Not his wife) and when he got to Oz he eventually got a small farm or worked on a farm. He had two children both worked for the government. He believed one of the children was called Nora.
His Cousins version.
He went away to serve in WW1 and while he was away his wife had been messing around with one of the neighbours and it produced a child. The child was born while he was away. Upon his return the shame was too much and so they emigrated to Oz after the war. He worked on a farm but his wife could not put up with it so she left him.

Does anyone know this family?  I am unsure where to look for newer info (ie after 1900) on Aust databases and Ancestry.com.au isn't much help according to him.

Hoping someone can help

Cheers
Tanya

Have you browsed the Australian Resources at the top of the board?

Electoral records are online on the subscription based website you have mentioned.

A cheaper and quicker option to purchasing a certificate is to purchase a transcription. Same information and adequate for family history.  Cost around AUD$17.
