Hi John,

I wish every one had knowledge like you, yes i know what your saying may take a while to work it out, the road from the bottom to wyvern theatre i know, my mum always said opposite the wyvern was a church cant remember sorry about 1948-1958.

I meant last post cetus buildings where the road from you said garage ford was it walker jackson towards the county ground it was somewhere there i believe as i have family members living there.

So about less than half a mile away from what was cow lane.
Sorry that was another post but never got around to it as i knew where that was.

John do you know if this was the start of new swindon where most people lived then?

hi, yes, walker jackson is the new hotel. wrong side of princes st.county ground side of junction. new swindon started nearer the railway. this area was on the outskirts. cow lane may have been there earlier as the canal sidingss/ docks were at the bottom. also the junction were the car sales was was [ i think] the golden lion bridge. any way, have a look at this

Don't know if this is allowed, I'm sure it will be removed if that is the case.
Didn't work anyway, it was a newspaper article regarding Red Cow Pub.

Like to give this site some new life. Was 'Red Cow' always it's name or was it ever Engineers Arms? I know that it has been suggested that Elm Villa was once the Engineers Arms but I am sceptical. T

I think the Engineers was nothing to do with either the Red Cow or Elm Villa. If I am right it was near the railway works entrance.
That's an interesting painting, although the Red Cow didn't look a lot like that in the 60's when I used to go in for a pie and a pint during lunchtime at college.
