Murray family of Cringletie-search
« on: Sunday 20 February 05 06:59 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for more information on my great(4x) grandfather John Murray(immigrated Nova Scotia) born Sutherland Scotland 1700?, brother of Capt. Alexander Murray(stationed Quebec Canada and West Indies 1750's) and Col. Hugh
Murray(R. Irish Rifles) stationed Halifax Nova Scotia, according to our family history.
Is this connected to Murray family of Cringletie of Peeblesshire County Scotland? or am I going in the wrong direction? I don't know where to search next.

Hi there,

Welcome to RootsChat.

Sutherland is a large sparsely populated county in the far north-west of Scotland.  Peebles is located south of Edinburgh and as the crow flies from Sutherland you are talking about maybe 200 miles.  Unless a Murray family owned estates in both places, the chances of a connection are limited.  I have been to Cringletie House - a long time ago admittedly, good restaurant, lovely house, superb location.
