Pre 1841 on the sections of early censuses that does survive including for Hackney only the head of households name appears. The rest of the information is just how many males and females there were in the household (by 1821 these were grouped into age categories)

This webpage gives an example of a surviving early census page.

http://privatewww.essex.ac.uk/~alan/family/N-EarlyCensuses.html

Only from 1841 onwards are the names of everyone in the household given and their age, but relations are given only from the 1851 census onwards along with exact places of birth.

Valda

Valda, thanks so much for this - 'insider' knowledge certainly eases the burden!
Any info from the early censuses would be helpful I think - ie. I would know how many children at least which may fill in some gaps. How accessible is this information?
Thanks.
Frances

Hi Frances

These are East of London Family History Society publications but I don't think they are current publications.

Certainly there have been other requests on Rootshcat for lookups.
You will also probably find publications like this in Australia at SAG or the very large state libraries and no doubt LDS centres can order them.
