Kentmere churchyard
« on: Sunday 20 February 05 13:07 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if there is anyone living in Kentmere who could look up the details on a gravestone in the churchyard for me?  It is for John Rutherford Barkway and is to the North of the church.  He died in 1945.
I know its a long shot but thank you in anticipation!

Hi Brian

It's a long time since you posted this request, so you may have the info you were seeking by now, but if not this might help...

I don't live in Kentmere but was there in May and, poking round the churchyard, I spotted a CWGC headstone.  It was for John Rutherford Barkway and, having an idle interest in WW2 RAF history, I took a photo and thought I'd look up the CWGC record some day.

I finally got round to uploading photos from the trip tonight, and saw the photo of John's grave.  A quick google on his name then brought me to this site and to your question.

So, the dedication on the headstone is fairly simple and is as follows:
_________________________

(RAF crest)

631072 Corporal
J. R. Barkway
Royal Air Force
8th May 1945  Age 46

(cross)

of Greenhead Kentmere
"Steadfast unto death"

Would you like me to send you the photo?

Best regards

Linda

Sorry to butt in on the OP's question but Linda, i don't suppose you have any Gilpin information from your visit?
Thanks
Christine
