Marriage Certificate - what religion?
« on: Saturday 25 April 09 20:46 BST (UK) »
Hi,

This is an excerpt from my Gt-Gt-Gt-Gt Uncles' (Giovanni Mazzei) marriage from Bath in 1843.

I can't make out the religion:-

"Married in the Registrars Office according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the ?????? before me"

Can anybody tell me what it says, and secondly what it was?

Giovanni's 2nd marriage in 1852 was according to the Catholic faith.

Thanks,

Darin.

I think it says "parties before me" which is a little odd.

It makes more sense if the words "according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the" are crossed out.
I've got one register office marriage & that has been done.

Marriages in a Catholic Church always had to have a registrar present to deal with the legal side of things.  What if, on this occasion, they did it the other way around - took a Catholic priest with them to the registry office?  It might make sense then.

"by" is scored out so it looks to me as if it was intended to read "parties before me."
Perhaps they belonged to some unusual religious group that didn't fit normal categories?

They probably had a second religious ceremony if they were RC.
