Hi,
i'm currently researching Walkers of Aberdeen. I've come to a brickwall at a James Walker, who was born in 1896, Aberdeen. He was not named Walker at birth however, but Hardie or Paterson.

best regards,

julia

Hi Julia,

Sorry about the delay in answering you I must have missed your post somehow :-[

I don't know if our Walkers would connect - the family that I am researching goes further back than 1890's. They were George Walker and Elizabeth Lyal, married 1 June 1794 and lived at Wardfold, Coull most of their married life. Their children were Ann, Margaret, Isabella, William, Alexander, John and Mary all born at Coull. I haven't found out much about them except for sightings in the Census. Margaret, my 3xgreat grandmother died in 1834.

I'm sure that you probably have already but have you tried the 1901 Census for James or checked for a death or marriage certificate on the Scotlands People site? Also, you could try a simple Google search using Walker and Aberdeen, I've had some successes doing that with other names.

Sorry I can't be of more help but don't give up, I've found that just when I've almost given up something turns up !

Best Wishes
Elaine

Hi Ysabeau,

Thanks for replying
I have Elizabeth Anderson born about 1755 in Birse. She married Robert Turner at Torquhindlochie, Birse on 11 July 1782. I haven't found out anything else about her I'm afraid but she could connect to your Isabella.
I had a lot of help in tracing my Birse connections from Sharon who's website at -  www.geocities.com/sharemslie/ -  is all about Birse. It's a lovely site and well worth a look.
Best Wishes
Elaine

Hi,
Julia again.
If this is any help, my G-grandmother, a Betsy White Hardie (mother of "James Hardie or Paterson, later James Paterson Reid, later James Reid Walker!), married a William Paterson @ 113 Skene Street, Old Machar, Aberdeen, on 14th Dec 1883. There is an M R JOSS as a witness.
I've found 3 children from that marriage from the 1891 census living in Huntly Street, Old Machar, as ANNIE S , AGNES J & JANE L Paterson.
Then I found a birth Entry from GROS for Agnes Ann JOSS Paterson, b @119 Skene St, Old Machar 4th Oct 1884.
Hope this helps with your Joss research?
best regards,
Julia

Hi Julia,

Thanks for the information, I'll certainly keep it in mind  :)

My Joss family begins (so far) with George born about 1785 who married Jane/Jean Henderson in Old Machar in 1813. Their daughter Elizabeth born about 1815 married Alexander Morrison in Old Machar on 8 Dec 1840. Elizabeth died in 1882 at Brokenfolds, Marnoch.
I've found a lot of info on Elizabeth and Alexander and their family but would like to find out more about George and Jane.

Thanks again
Elaine

Juliabibi    Reply #5   " married a William Paterson "

Hi there,

I have a William George Begg Paterson born c1875, living with Grandmother Isabella Cullen / Massie in 1881 census. Peterhead address.   Using a process of elimination to work out his parent  !!

Isabella was listed as 'Cullen or Massie' in the census. was listed as 'Head' of household, but no husband William (Massie.). Not listed as widow. If he still lived with her, why was she listed as head ? Surely if he was dead, she would be listed as 'widow' ?

Isabella had a child Peter Buchan, before she married William Massie.

Can't find any evidence, as yet.

Thank you for looking.

Best,
