naming patterns in England
« on: Tuesday 27 April 04 20:36 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Does anyone have detailed information regarding naming patterns in the UK.
Surnames were often used as middle names and I would like to know if there was a set pattern to this practice.
i.e. was the surname of a male or female grandparent designated to a specific child or grandchild, in a specific order of birth?
I recently found the marriage of my 4th grandparents, Daniel BREEDS and Sarah FRIEND in 1797.
Although I felt certain I had the right couple, I was somewhat hesitant....
Until today, that is, when I noticed the name of one of their grandchildren - Joseph FRIEND Fuggle.

If there was a specific pattern this would be most useful.
Searching for BREEDS/BREADS, FARNDELL, JOY, DOBELL, FARMER, FRIEND, AUSTIN/AUSTEN, KENNARD, BRITCHER, WATERS, EAST, KIRBY in Kent and East Sussex,  also JENNINGS, BELL, COULTAS  in Yorkshire
