James McIntyre - b. abt 1828 Ballymena or Ballymoney
« on: Tuesday 05 May 09 00:32 BST (UK) »
I have hit a brick wall in my research for the family of James McIntyre and would be very grateful for any help at all.

From the death certificate of James McIntyre I have the following :

James McIntyre b 1849 in Maybole Ayrshire, Scotland d. 1908 in Oakbank, Kirknewton and East Calder, Midlothian, Scotland.

Father : James McIntyre b. Antrim occupation coal miner
Mother : Ann Ferguson

From the 1851 census I have found a James McIntyre, lodger, living with a family called O'Neil from Antrim, if this is my James then perhaps he was not married to Ann Ferguson.

There is another family of McIntyre's moved from Ballymena or Ballymoney to Oakbank, Kirknewton and East Calder, Midlothian, Scotland.  I can find no link between this family and my James Mcintyre but feel there must be a connection.  This other family is William John McIntyre b abt 1828 Ballymena and Martha Stevenson b abt 1828 Ballymena or Ballymoney.

I would like to here from anyone researching 'McIntyre' from Antrim.

Thank you

Carol

Carol,
This is most likely a red herring but you may as well have the information anyway. From Emerald Ancestors,

James McIntyre married Annie Ferguson in Limavady Church of Ireland, Co. Londonderry on 6 Jan 1859.

James McIntyre and Ann Ferguson had 5 children (or more) born 1864-1872 in Coleraine, Co. Londonderry area between 1864-1872 so the above marriage might not be the correct one.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi - I know your post about the McIntyres was all a long time ago but I have just come across it. I am a direct descendant of William McIntyre and Martha Stevenson - my gggrandparents. At the time of writing you did not believe they are your family but as I too am struggling with the proverbial brick wall I wondered if you have made any further progress. It would be good to hear what has happened since you wrote that.

William John McIntyre's parents were Andrew McIntyre and Ann McLeich.  Andrew was born in Ballymoney.  I think it is possible that they are also the parents of my James McIntyre.  I have no evidence for this.  My reasoning is that James was born 1826 in Ballymena and William John was born abt 1828 in Ballymena.  I do not know what the population of Ballymena was in the 1800's but the population of Oakbank, Kirknewton in Scotland in the 1800's was tiny - it was only a row of houses at that time.  So it seems that 2 boy McIntyres from Ballymena ending up in Oakbank, Kirknewton are likely to be related at least, if not brothers.  Also I see that William John McIntyre called his first son James.  This James (1852-1872) was born in Ireland and died in Oakbank, Kirknewton.  William John and  Martha then had another son in 1874 and called him James.  'James' is likely to be a family name.

That is as far as I have managed to get since my last post.  I would be interested to hear what you have found. My James McIntyre is my husband's 2xg grandfather.

Hi,
This may be another red herring or possibly a transcription error, On 20 Nov 1849 William John McIntyre, father's name Andrew, married Matty STEINSON, father's name Hugh, in Ballymoney Civil Registrars Office.
