Link: SEAX Essex online PRs
« on: Tuesday 05 May 09 01:01 BST (UK) »
The Essex Records Office have simplified the system of accessing the on-line Essex Parish Registers.

http://seax.essexcc.gov.uk/default.asp

On the screen that appears there are three headings entitled, Everything, Accessions & Images.

Click on the word Images.

Then on the next screen, in the box entitled Search Criteria, type in the name of the PRs, eg chelmsford parish register.

If you want to see a list of the PRs that are on-line, simply typing in the words parish register will bring up a list of all the PRs currently on-line plus a few other things such as Electoral Roles.
Concentrating currently on:
Essex: Card, Harris, Stowell, Theobald/Tibbles & Turner.
Norfolk: Beale, Cork & Dalton.
Yorkshire: Oswald Sturdy birth/baptism c1708, Oswald where the devil are you?

Lots of new images on Seax.  All parish registers prior 1700 are  available to view online, some go a bit beyond 1700.

Fantastic, thank you so much!  ;D

I had tried this site before, did not quite get it  ???

Your instructions are brilliant, just found 4th g. grandfather's baptism. The first of my ancestors outside the Midlands, I thought I was off on a wild goose chase in Essex based on 1851 census info only as he did not survive to the 1861.

What a wonderful site, being able to see originals ... wow! Back now to look for more.  :D

Hi cripper,

I'm not sure why you couldn't access Horndon PRs, perhaps there was a glitch in the system, I've just been into SEAX and accessed Horndon PRs with no problems.  I simply followed my own instructions (shown at the beginning of this thread), typed in horndon parish register and up they came, so try again and see what happens.

Occasionally when there are large numbers of people trying to access the online PRs a notice will appear with something to the effect of "unable to access the records", in that case I wait and try again in say half an hour, that usually works.

Currently the Horndon PRs start at 1557 for baptisms and go to 1763, for marriages to 1754 and for burials to 1764, the Essex records Office have now commenced putting on the later years PRs.

Regards

This is a fantastic resource! Let's hope that other counties provide something similar soon.

A slightly easier way to search for the parish you want:
Go to http://seax.essexcc.gov.uk/displayParishContents.asp.
Choose the first letter of the parish you want, then select the parish and the name of the church.
A list of record types and dates will appear. If it says 'Digital Image' in the 'Format' column, you can view the images online.
Click on 'view' to start looking!

It seems that parishes beginning with A have the most coverage at the moment. Here's a rough list of parishes and dates.

Aberton, St Andrew
Baptisms 1560-1971
Burials 1564-2002
Marriages 1564-1689, 1711-1950

Claire's method is simpler and quicker but one step was omitted  ;D

http://seax.essexcc.gov.uk/displayParishContents.asp.

On the SEAX page click on Essex Ancestors which is located on the right hand side.

Then choose the first letter of the parish

Pick the Parish from a given list.

Finally click on the church and off you go.

Regards.
