Help reading occupation, please?
« on: Wednesday 06 May 09 21:49 BST (UK) »
Can anyone make out the word beyond "Agricultural laborer" in this 1891 census entry?

Is it CURSTALSER?

Any thoughts as to the meaning?

thank you very much in anticipation  :)

It looks a bit like Caretaker to me.

I would go with Jen's Caretaker too, although the 1st 'e' in 'Caretaker' is different to the others  ???.

Thank you!

I see what you mean, the enumerator doesn't join up the top of his a in agricultural, labourer, does he.

I've had a look at one or two pages around that entry and there are other instances of that slightly odd "e", so I'm happy with it.

And yes, the un-joined up "a" is fairly common as well.

He seems to be in a property which is part of a larger farm estate and although he is described as a Servant, he is the sole occupant of his house.

Apologies to all, have been prevented by 'orrible viruses and worms etc from getting on to the computer (now actually on new computer, so 'orrible were they), thanks very much for your help.

This is an interesting one, because the man in question used to be a tenant farmer up to this census.  Family history has it that he remarried after being widowed, and the new wife ran through all the money...........certainly, instead of being on his own farm, he is now a caretaker and farm servant on another.

He died only a couple of years later.

Many thanks for your helpful suggestions. :)
