Seeking DNA connection for James Hugh ROSS
« on: Saturday 09 May 09 03:38 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

On the World War1 board the search is on for descendants of the Fromelles solidiers.
Some chatters are focussing on the Australian connections particularly.
Female descendants are preferably sought.

James Hugh ROSS had 3 or 4 sisters who married in Victoria and we have located their deaths and interrment places.

Is there anybody who can look up newspaper Death Notices for these women in hopes that living descendants might be located?

There's also a sister Edith Ross for whom I can't confirm a marriage. And there was a brother John Ross. Both were still single on the 1931 Electoral Roll, but I haven't located them in 1936 nor have I found their deaths.

Here's the link to the James Hugh Ross thread......

Hi Billy,

I'm one of the chatters on the thread for James Hugh Ross.  My OH and I thank you, and Dee and of course Sparrett for all the work everyone on all the threads is undertaking.  It is likely that among the forces opposing the AIF lads there at Fromelles was a Corporal A Hitler.  You will no doubt recognise that name.

Billy, the information Sparrett has found indicates cremations with remains collected for two of the sisters, so doubt there'd be any plaques.

However, there may be one for the following......

At Fawkner Memorial Park...  cremated
Name-Isabella W Martyn aged 70
Located at Garden Of Remembrance 2 Shrub Garden Bed B Shrub 83.
Service Date
MARTYN  Isabella W.  7/05/1962

Hello all

(Thanks Sue for your PM)

I do my look-ups at the Australian National Library whose holdings of newspapers is wonderful - from a historical and contemporary perspective as well as the number of obscure regional and local newspapers.

I would be delighted to look these up but unfortunately can't get to the Lib next week until about Thursday.  I'll make sure I have another look at this thread and if no-one else has found them before I get there I'll be very happy to have a hunt.

I do need an exact death date, though, as it is too hard to trawl through papers for more than a week's worth or so at a time!

Cheers, Judith

Hi All,

Umm, not sure if this will help, but the NLA has digitised many newspapers and is currently digitising many more.  The link would seem to be http://ndpbeta.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/home and is freely available to search and to save images and pdf files.  There are papers from as early as 1803 and already they are into the early 20th C.  Eventually they will be up to 1954.

Hi ,

Well, Just  Moi, I  am guessing that  many Rchatters, like me,   have explored the available papers on this website  over the recent  months they have been available..... and, maybe searched them more intensively  in the last few days with the soldiers in mind.

Fresh eyes, perhaps, will turn up bits we have missed  :D
