http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Home/OnlineCollections- PCC Wills held by Public Record Office, many available on DocumentsOnline, cover period up to 1858. Until that date, all wills had to be proved (formally approved) by church and other courts. The Prerogative Court of Canterbury (PPC), the most important of these courts, dealt with the relatively wealthy individuals living mainly in the south of England and most of Wales (what was originally the ecclesiastical province of Canterbury). Searching the index is free, but it costs £3 to download a digital image of a document.

Finding Probate Records
« Reply #1 on: Sunday 21 October 12 10:27 BST (UK) »
Pre-1858 finding probate records can be difficult.

The standard guide is the fifth edition of Probate Jurisdictions: where to look for wills by Jeremy Gibson and Else Churchill (Federation of Family History Societies, Bury, 2002).

Andrew Millard's guide lists to English, Welsh and Scottish probate indexes which have been produced since the publication of that book: http://community.dur.ac.uk/a.r.millard/genealogy/probate.php
