Help with occupation please - COMPLETED, MANY THANKS
« on: Monday 11 May 09 20:44 BST (UK) »
I'd appreciate help regarding the entries shown below, please.
Marcellus, aged 24, seems to have some kind of mark entered against his name.
Edward, 21, is a Government Clerk (I think) but something has been written over the top.  Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Many thanks,
Greensleeves

Council or Court  ?

The enumerators had to put things into categories, I believe, so often added things to fit them

Hi Greensleeves

The scrawl above "Government Clerk" is a note added during the statistical analysis of the census and does not really matter.  However I think it reads "Civil S" meaning Civil Servant which is the way "Government Clerk" has been classified.

I have no idea what the mark by Marcellus means.

All the best

I was thinking along similar lines, but I wondered about Serv C (which I've never seen before).

I think the Z or X for Marcellus signifies "No occupation" - Stan will know.
Don't cry because its over. Smile because it happened.

Well, what speedy responses!  Many thanks to you all for your interest.  The father of these young gentlemen is shown as "Living on own means" so it could be  that Marcellus was not required to earn a living.  Edward went on to serve in the Ox & Bucks Light Infantry but I have yet to get round to tracking Marcellus' further career.
Regards to you all
