Need info. re. Don Egans, O'Connell Street, 1929/1933
« on: Tuesday 19 May 09 17:31 BST (UK) »
Evening all

Further to my post about tracing a hairdresser to Grafton Street, I have now located the name and the location of the salon I am looking for:

Don Egans, O'Connell Street, Dublin

I have found adverts from the local press in 1929 and 1933 but in all likelihood it was there before and after these dates. The adverts state that the salon is next to the Gresham (Hotel I presume, which is at no.23).

If anyone can give me any info on the salon, especially who was the owner that would be fantastic.

Thanks in advance

Hannah

In Thom's of 1949 at no 23 O'Connell St, Upper there is : Don Egan , coiffeur

at the same address there's a seed merchant, the Railway clerks assoc, and 3 other private residents.

the Gresham is listed as number 20 to 22 O'Connell St, upper

You really are a star Shane, thank you.

Not sure where I go from here in terms of identifying an owner but at least I know where the Salon was now and that it was still there in 1949.

Don would be the business-owner, and probably lease-holder of the premises, of his floor or section of the building

May I add to what Shane has supplied?

My first Thoms showing Don Egan at No.23 is dated 1934 (not there in 1929) and my last Thoms showing him is dated 1948. Thoms for 1951 shows Mahon's Ladies Hairdressing Rooms.

I hope this gives a closer fit for dates.

Not sure if you did anymore with this - my tree has lots of mahons/egans that are hairdressers - all from Dublin city
