Hi Jimmy,

Welcome to Rootschat!  :)

According to Ancestry: (including weird and wonderful transcription errors)

1851 Census the family were living in the Cowynd (Cow Wynd)

William age 42, Letter Carrier, born Falkirk
Christian age 44, born Athlene, Ireland. (Athlone?)
Robert age 15, Writer's Apprentice, born Falkirk
Janet age 13, Letter Carrier's Daughter born Falkirk
Elizabeth age 11, Scholar, born Falkirk
Helen age 6, Scholar, born Falkirk
John age 4, born Falkirk

1861 Census, still at Cow Wynd

William age 52, Letter Carrier, born Falkirk
Christian age 56, born Ireland
Robert age 25, Black Smith, born Falkirk
Elizabeth age 21, born Falkirk
John age 14, Lin Smith (probably Tin Smith), born Falkirk

Dtr. Janet possibly married by 1861?
No mention of dtr. Helen age 16

1871 Census, still at Cow Wynd

William age 62, Retired Letter Carrier, born Falkirk
Christina age 66, born Falkirk
Helen, age 26, Dressmaker, born Falkirk
John age 24, *Park at Lavloark, born Falkirk

*I have absolutely no idea what a Park at Lavoark might be!!  ::)

If you download the image from Scotland's People, all will be revealed!

Anne

P.S. Christina/Christian were interchageable.

On the 1841 Census:

Living at Cow Wynd

William, age 30, Letter Carrier, born Falkirk
Christian, age 30, born Ireland
Margret, age 7,  born Falkirk
Robert, age 6, born Falkirk
Janet, age 4, born Falkirk
Elizabeth, age 1, born Falkirk

No sign of William and Christina in the 1881 Census, but it may be that I just can't find them.

Anne

Hi Jimmy,

Not a Fleming.

I just like to jump in and help as much as I can whenever I can!

I thought it was John's parents you were trying to trace - sorry!! I didn't realised it was John Junior.

Do you have him on the 1881, 1891 & 1901 Census?

Anne

Hi Jimmy,
Jessie Hendry is a twig on a branch of my family tree. (Hendrys originally from Alloa in Clackmannanshire) I have the 1901 census for John Fleming and herself and their 7 children in Galashiels, Selkirkshire plus a load of stuff on Jessie's ancestry if you are interested?
All the best.
John Hendry

Hi Binman,

Briefly my research is -

Jessie Hendry was born on 12 May 1856 in Alloa, Clackmannanshire. She died on 23 Jan 1936 in 148 Kilbowie Road, Clydebank, Dunbartonshire.

Jessie married John Fleming son of William Fleming and Christina ?Thomson? on 14 Jul 1882 in Alexandria, Bonhill, Dunbartonshire. John was born about 1832.

Jessie parents were -

James Hendry, a seaman, and Jane Bell who were married on 1 Mar 1844 in Alloa, Clackmannanshire. James Hendry was born about 1823 in Alloa, Clackmannanshire. He died on 11 Jun 1909 in 11 Station Road, Dumbarton. Jane Bell was born on 20 Jul 1818 in Forgandenny, Perthshire. She was christened on 26 Jul 1818 in Forgandenny, Perthshire. She died on 29 Mar 1882 in Blantyres Land, Bowling, Old Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire.

Her grandparents were -

James Hendry, a shoemaker, and Jane Donaldson who were married on 2 Jun 1799 in Alloa, Clackmannanshire. I believe that James Hendry was born on 14 Jan 1779 in Alloa, the son of John Hendry, a shoemaker, and Margaret Neil who were married on 16 Aug 1769 in Alloa. I believe that James died between 1841 and 1851.

Jane Donaldson was born on 26 Nov 1780 in Alloa, Clackmannanshire the daughter of Peter Donaldson, a labourer, and Helen Philps who were married on 25 May 1777 in Alloa, Clackmannanshire. I believe that Jane died on 18 Oct 1863 in Alloa, Clackmannanshire.

However loads more details, censuses, etc, plus why I believe you Jessie is related to my Hendrys can be found on my webpages at -

http://www.thehendrys.freeserve.co.uk/FHistory/hendtxt/

follow the link in the first few lines "for possible lines of descent from this individual - click here" and then use the above lineage to work you way from James Hendry forward to Jessie.

I hope this all makes sense and is of some interest. If you have any questions don't hesitate to get in touch. I try to ensure that any research I publish is accurate and proven as far as possible but...

All the best

Hi Binman,

Found your post when rebuilding the Falkirk Fleming family on this page. You've probably moved forward yourself but am posting just in case.

From my searching (please please check all this yourself) your John married twice. Jessie Hendry (2nd wife) 17 Jul 1882 Bonhill, Dunbartonshire. They had James 1883; Robert 1885; Jane Bell 1887; George Henry 1889; Christina 1891; Jessie Hendry 1894 and Frederick 1899.

Back in 1849 John was living at Alloa when he married his 1st wife Elizabeth Thomson 31 Mar 1849 at Clackmannan, Clackmannan. They had Mary 1852; Helen 1854; William 1856; Elizabeth 1858 and Anstus /Anstice / Annie Thomson 1865.

Daughters Elizabeth & Anstice T both married in Milwaukee, USA Elizabeth to Donald Downie and Anstice to Joseph David Wassell. As Annie, Joseph & 4 chn were in the 1901 census at Motherwell and back in USA (Washington) for 1910 census.

John died 17 Jan 1905 at Galashiels aged 84. This names both his wives and Jessie also gave his parent details as John Fleming, merchant and mother Christian Thomson. Couldn't find parent's marriage or John's birth...anywhere! There's a marriage 1811 St Cuthbert's, Edingburgh btwn a William Fleming, merchant of West Wemyss and Christian Thomson and the only child I could find was a Mary 1812 at Wemyss.
