in search of mc millans zimbabwe
« on: Monday 25 May 09 19:37 BST (UK) »
hi there , just wondering can anyone help me locate the whereabouts of the mc millan family of zimbabwe. the father, now deceased , was called ian, married to christine and they had 2 sons, one of which died approx.20 years ago. the boys were called ian and bruce and i am not sure which one is deceased. any help would be great , trying to compile family tree but need help for the mc millans. the surviving mc millan boy would now be approx 60 and the father, ian senior, originally came from glasgow in the '40/'50.

Hi gaithers

What an interesting post...........would you perhaps know if the best friend at school, of the Mc Millan boy who now would be about 60, name, also was 'Ian'?    ???

If so, I may know your Ian Mc Millan's best friend!   :)

Cheers

Hello gaithers

Absolutely, yes...........for the past 11 years I've been friends of 'your Ian's', best friend at school's, sister!  Her brother, Ian, left Zim and settled in Edinburgh, with his wife, maybe eight or so years ago, and through his sister, I've heard mention of Ian McMillan, frequently.    ::)

The last I heard of him, maybe three years ago, was that he was still in Zim and my friend's brother and he, were still in business together.   ;)

Will phone my friend soonest to try find out where 'your Ian' is now........?    ???

Cheers

Hello Gaithers

Just a thought, do the forenames 'Ewan' (or variations of spellings for), or 'Alexander' feature as family names on the Scottish side of your family?

Also, won't be long now and as the search for your family is in the hands of my friends, hoping that you will soon receive very good news.

Fingers crossed

Hello Gaithers

Glad that my friends were able to confirm that the McMillans are well and thriving in ~~~~~~   ;D~~~~~   ;D

Pity that we haven't yet managed to get contacts for you, so perhaps a fellow RC Member, perhaps based in "that country", could contact them for you?   ???

Also, there's the subscription magazine, "Rhodesians Worldwide", which may help with someone contacting your family for you?!    8)

Cheers

Hello Gaithers

If you google "Rhodesians Worldwide", 'keeping the spirit alive', you will find their contacts.

They are based in Mesa, Arizona, U.S.A.   8)

Hello Bruce, I imagine gaithers will be coming back to you shortly, he and I are cousins and he knows way more than me on the wider family.  I'll take a guess that your grandparents may have been John MacMillan and Lizzie McGaffin (photographed below on Portobello beach Edinburgh in 1949), Lizzie was a sister of our grandfather William Thomas McGaffin. Lizzie and William T. were in turn the children of fishmonger William McGaffin and Jeannie McClelland from Partick, Glasgow, though William was originally from Bleary in County Down. On the MacMillan side, I've a notion that John's father was a coal miner called Angus MacMillan and his wife was Helen... but I'm working from memory and would need to dig out notes.

Anyway, posting email addresses isn't permitted on RootsChat but there is a personal messaging system which you can use once you have made 2 posts - it might be worth posting back a couple of times so you can use it as needed.
