1814 Birth Record Brown
« on: Monday 25 May 09 20:29 BST (UK) »
I would be very grateful if anyone could try to trace my 3 x gt grandmother.

Unfortunately she had a very common name - Ann Brown.  Censuses say she was b. 1814 in Brighton.  Sorry, I don't know which parish.

Thanks

Hi Christine

Had a look on the baptism database on the Sussex Family History Group website.  There was one family in Brighton but no daughter Ann.

The nearest is the following:

Portslade, St Nicholas
Anne Brown
baptised 22 March 1814 to James and Elizabeth Brown (Labourer)

Thanks Kerry.  I already knew about the Portslade birth from the IGI, but don't know if it's the right one or not.  Seems like this might be another brickwall!

Best wishes

Do you know when she married, if it was after 1837 the marriage certificate would give father's name.  There is always a slim chance of something before 1837 on an original transcript that might mention a family member like a witness.

Yes, I have her marriage cert. It was 1833 in Marylebone, neither witness was a Brown, so that's no help either.

I believe you are also a subscriber to Genes.
Have you tried contacting the 3 other people on that site who also have a Brighton Ann Brown, albeit in 1813 rather than 1814?  if you are prepared to be flexible by a year, you have Ann Browne bapt St Nicholas Brighton 24 May 1813, parents Thomas & Sarah

Alternatively, have a look at the Browns of Pyecombe.  Often people choose to tell the census enumerator the name of the biggest town near where they were born, rather than refer to a small village, because they think no one will have heard of it.  For example lots of people used to say they were born in Brighton, when it was actually Hove, Preston or the somewhere else in the immediate area

Hi Roy

Thanks for your idea.  I have to say I've not thought of looking on GR.  However, I've just tried to find the Browns you suggested with no luck.

Which part of GR did you click on to get that info?

Regards

Christine

Sorry you had no luck doing an Internet search for those parishes around Brighton that are on the IGI.  Remember not every parish is on the IGI and some are only partially on it so you may have to go to the record office yourself to look at the others.

The IGI does have Ann(e) Brown(e) baptised Brighton 1813 however.

G.R.
To get the variations of Ann(e) Brown(e) on G.R.,
[1] put the name into the search box (it''ll tell you there are thousands)
[2] fine tune those by putting in Brighton and the date +/- 5 years.
[3] Between 1813-1815 you'll get 4 interested parties including yourself.
[4] Go to the contact box.

Good hunting
