Mattocks family, Burlingham/Ludham
« on: Thursday 28 May 09 15:04 BST (UK) »
Hi - I have recently started helping my uncle to trace his family tree. The Mattocks family moved down from Cumberland in the 1890s. Robert (1839-1921) and Betsy (1843-1884, nee Jackson) had 10 children:

Margaret Ann 1862-1950 never married
Mary Elizabeth 1865
Robert 1868
John 1870 m. Margaret ??
Sarah 1872-1955 never married
William 1875 m. Sarah Jane Southward 1895, Cumberland
Samuel Jackson 1876 m. 1898, d. 1899
Thomas 1879 m. Margaret Ann Starling 1902, Norfolk

Robert was a farmer and took over Green Farm at Burlingham St Andrew sometime between 1891 and 1901. He then owned the Laurels at Ludham from c1904.

I would be really interested if anyone has any links with the Mattocks or has any more info on them. My uncle's grandfather was Robert's son William and I have more info on him but too much to post at one time as he has 10 children!!  ;)

Hi Tati,

No, I don't have any of that so thank you. I have only been doing the tree for a couple of weeks and have mostly focused on my uncle's direct line so am just padding things out now. It's interesting that Robert Jnr was running Schoose Farm as that is where Robert Snr and family were on the 1881 census! So, looks like they went down south and Robert Jnr stayed where he was.

Hi Rosie

I have been researching the Mattocks family for my neighbour whose Grandfather was the John Mattocks who married Margaret Tweddle. He tells me that the family hired a train when they moved to Norfolk and brought everything down with them including their animals! It must have been quite a journey.

I think you'll find that Robert Mattocks had three children with Mary Elizabeth Burrow - Robert 1887,  Sarah Jackson Mattocks 1888 and John 1889. She was staying with her Grandparents in 1891 and can be found on that census.

RG12 4283 48 4

Happy hunting :)

I have only recently been researching the Mattocks Family. My Grandfather was Thomas who Married Margaret Ann Starling  and later moved from Ludham to Farm at Dagenham. Robert born 1839 in Aspatria. His parents were George born 1911 and I think Elizabeth .
Georges father was Robert born about 1781 who married Elizabeth Edgar at Dalston May 21 1809.
I have not been able to get any further back. Any help comment would be appreciated
