Maybe not relevant but my maiden name was Small.

The family originally came over from Co. Antrim in Ireland around the mid 1800's and settled in Dundee.

It would seem that this surname is more widespread than you think.

Madden, County Westmeath
Patrick, Fife
Easson, Fife

When researching my own Smalls I did notice many Smalls living in Dundee. I haven't found any connection with my Smalls though. Most of mine were farm workers and lived around the Airlie/Glenisla/Glamis and Forfar Parishes.

Hello Liviani, None of these Small's connect to any of mine. My Small's are all in Canterbury and Thanet in Kent. My earliest ancestor so far is John Small 1776 - 1825 who was a publican in Canterbury. I do not know where he was born, but have been told that there are Scottish origins. So if you come across anything of interest to me I would be pleased to hear. thanks, Michael Small.

When researching my own Smalls I found out that the ones I had mentioned earlier from the census in Coupar Angus were not my correct Smalls.

There was a landowning family in the parishes I am searching at the moment. Known as the 'Smalls of Dirnanean'. They had this since the 1500s up until a distant relative sold Dirnanean in the 1970s.  I don't believe them to be connected to my Smalls, but I am still unsure at this stage. I believe the connection may be further back for me if there is one due to the similarity in parishes and first names.

The only reason I'm mentioning them here is that this family really spread out around the country and latterly the world especially America (and possibly Australia). I found note of this guy - Dr Alexander Small c. 1710 son of Patrick Small and Magdalen Robertson. He ended up as a doctor in London. Here is his wiki page if you're interested.

I obviously don't know if he's connected to you but with the similarities I feel he may be worth looking into for yourself. I don't know if he ever married or had children but perhaps a place to start?
