Cottage place house Newington 1861 question
« on: Sunday 31 May 09 18:50 BST (UK) »
Hello all

I am trying to locate "Cottage Place House Newington" on old maps on the Census the following is listed.

Address = Cottage Place House
Civil parish = St.Mary Newington
Registration District = St.Mary Newington
Sub district = Trinity
Municipal Borough = Lambeth
in Surrey

OK so I have located the St.Mary Newington and worked out what the Parish boundaries are to help me narrow down the possible location of Cottage Place house but what does the "Trinity" bit mean as I cant seem to locate any such sub district.

could someone point me in the right direction please.

very best regards

Paul :'(

I think that you should think about a vital comma being missing and that it should read.

Cottage, Place House, Newington.

Thus you should start by looking for Place House and then for a cottage in its grounds.

It might help to look at the description of the Enumeration District in in Trinity Newington. Which one was it?

Hi Stan

looks like its one
although if I'm honest its a little confusing to get my head around it all

perhaps I'm losing the plot

is it "Cottage Place House, Newington"
is it "Cottage, Place House" Newington

was it a Cottage in a particular place or Was it place in a given street, why so confusing I have got "St.Marys Newington" parish boundaries on a 1861 map put how or ware my "Cottage" whatever it is could be located I have no idea is a needle in a haystack for me at the moment.

I have read that the area during the 1850's was very overcrowded and poor but little else nice name for a poor slum type of housing sure paints a nice chocolate box image

although your link does give places close to my Cottage place I may be able to use this a guide and work out the location
thanks for your input though its much appreciated.

Paul

What Stan is saying is that you should consult the Description of  the Enumeration District, which is a page of the census which outlines the area covered by this record.  By marking out the area boundaries on a map, then looking at the entries street by street, you should be able to get a rough idea where this cottage was.

P.S. If you could give us a reference to the census entry (the number beginning with RG9), we can take a look too  :)

I can see a 'Cottage Place' on the 1861 census.

It starts at RG 9 / 337 / Folio 20/ Page 34.

There is also 1, Cottage Place, Lion Street (Private house) at RG 9 / 345 / Folio 114/ Page 3.

Paul , as Nick says, a precise census reference is needed so that we  can look at the original otherwise it is all guesswork.
