Hi Paul,
Don't feel embarrassed or dumb.
I tell you it took me ages to work out how to reference the 1841 census from your census information and I am constantly (or so it seems) offering the reference to posters here but don't look it up myself
I don't know what FindMyPast offers to you when you look at the census but if you open up the one for your ancestor you should if its the same image as we see on Anc. have certain details.
Above the main page are the items which tell you were you are:
Search/UK Census/1841/Surrey/St Mary Newington>Trinity>District 16
By clicking on Trinity- you get a list of the districts and if you look at descriptions- then you get the info I have given - if you click on District 16 description - you get what I gave you earlier.
Back to the page and image:
At the top of the census page (this is Anc. though so not sure if your is laid out the same) you see the forward/backward arrows and the image numbers.
However if you began at the beginning of District 16 pages you could then by following each census page, 'walk' the census.
So no- it is nothing to do with Jen's map- that is an added bonus because if the map were more detailed and larger (not Jen's fault
) you, I am fairly sure, would be able to see Cottage Place in that little triangle.
Hope this makes sense - difficult to write down what you mean isn't it
