Hi Heywood
I want to say a huge Paul type thank you to you and everybody who has helped me in my hunt for Cottage Place.

without this help i would have not be able to put the flesh on the bone of what little I originally had and that you all take time to help people like myself.

I have subscribed to a "a Family tree" research but perhaps with hindsite should have asked here before venturing on.

I perhaps feel a little embarrassed that I seem a bit dumb and should be able to research my own tree but without the correct subscription was not able to get all the proper facts.

So to you all a massive thankyou
which truly meant, without which there would be know people to help others

Paul

Hi Paul,
Don't feel embarrassed or dumb.
I tell you it took me ages to work out how to reference the 1841 census from your census information and I am constantly (or so it seems) offering the reference to posters here but don't look it up myself  ::)

I don't know what FindMyPast offers to you when you look at the census but if you open up the one for your ancestor you should if its the same image as we see on Anc. have certain details.

Above the main page are the items which tell you were you are:
Search/UK Census/1841/Surrey/St Mary Newington>Trinity>District 16

By clicking on Trinity- you get a list of the districts and if you look at descriptions- then you get the info I have given - if you click on District 16 description - you get what I gave you earlier.

Back to the page and image:
At the top of the census page (this is Anc. though so not sure if your is laid out the same) you see the forward/backward arrows and the image numbers.

However if you began at the beginning of District 16 pages you could then by following each census page, 'walk' the census.

So no- it is nothing to do with Jen's map- that is an added bonus because if the map were more detailed and larger (not Jen's fault  ;D) you, I am fairly sure, would be able to see Cottage Place in that little triangle.

Hope this makes sense - difficult to write down what you mean isn't it  :D

I use FindMyPast which, in general, I am very happy with. However, there doesn't seem to be the same access to the Enumeration District descriptions that you get on ancestry, which is a drawback in a situation like this  >:(

I have looked through most of the 19th century Londond maps on this site http://archivemaps.com/mapco/london.htm (which is where I found the Street index referred to above) but couldn't see Cottage Place on them.

Paul - I have enjoyed the hunt  ;D  I was brought up in London, but north of the Thames. South of the River is a bit of a closed book to me, so anything that increases my knowledge is a bonus  ;D  I am also a geographer by training, so anything to do with maps is not a chore but a pleasure.

Yes, you can go backwards and forwards through the pages on FindMyPast in the same way.

Hi  :)

Yep, Jen's right!  On FindMyPast census image pages, at the top in the centre below the census references are two blue buttons, "Previous Image", and "Next Image"  ;)

Kind regards
