I think you'll find that the note in the margin says

Cottage Place
1 House

What appears to have happened is that the enumerator found a return which had fallen out of the pile, and he added it later, out of sequence.  About 25 pages back you'll find the other houses in Cottage Place.

RIP 1949-10th January 2013

Best Wishes,  Nick.

Basically what Nick is saying is that he lived in a house in Cottage Place, Newington.

But this Cottage place doesn't seem seem to exist any more. You would have to check the old maps to try to find it.

We need the details of the enumeration district, which would give a rough guide to the neighbourhood and would give you an area within which to search. Unfortunately, FindMyPast doesn't seem to do the enumeration districts in the same way an ancestry does.

Thanks Jen

Thats what I mean all I no is that I narrowed Down the the Parish to st.Mary Newington, sub district Trinity, if I could work out where the sub district was it would give me a rough idea to look.
I do have old maps to look through.

I do regret subbing to FindMyPast a little disappointed with it (my opinion only) they have a lot missing in some parts.

many thanks

Hello,
I don't want to add to your confusion - these sites also mention Cottage Place and nearby streets - would this help?
(lots of references - so perhaps the Census description would help too)

Paul,
if you have access to old maps - the description seems quite specific and names streets around : William Street; Ayliffe Street; Harper Street

This looks like the approximate location that heywood has referred to.
Harper Street runs northwards in the centre of the map, off the New Kent Road. You can also see William Street and Aycliffe Street is the unnamed one which runs north-east from the western end of William Street. Also there is Adam Street which was also in the locality according to the census.

The problem with a heavily built up area such as this is that very many of the 'Places' 'Lanes' and 'Yards' mentioned on the census simply could not be shown on the map.
