Cando, the library in Omagh has both local newspapers in the local history section on microfiche from 1900 onwards. However, if you pay a small fee you can search these on- line. The link is here below

You may already have found this on the newspaper archive...?

Tyrone Constitution, 28th Feb 1908:

A well-known resident in this district passed away in the early hours of Tuesday morning last in the person of Mr. John Jack, of Magheracolton.  Deceased, who was in his eightieth year, had been ailing for some time, the death of his wife about a month ago having affected him greatly.  The late Mr. Jack was a direct descendant of the great John Knox, of Scotland, being grandson of the late Rev. Andrew Walsh, of Ardstraw, who was a great-great-grandson of the Scottish Reformer.  The Jack family are one of the most respected in the neighbourhood, and great sympathy is felt for the three surviving daughters.  The funeral took place yesterday (Thursday) to Ardstraw graveyard, and was largely attended.

Gilby....thank you :)   This has made my day :) :)  The Tyrone Constitution was not listed on the linked website.

So the family story was correct about no mention of his surviving sons in USA and Australia. Of course the reporter may simply not have been aware that John and Mary also had three sons, two of whom were living in 1908.  There are errors in the item as John JACK 1829-1908 was the great grandson of the late Reverend Andrew WELSH 1710-1781 of Ardstraw not grandson. Reverend Andrew WELSH was the great-great-great-great grandson of John  KNOX 1505-1572 not great-great grandson.  A number of generations missed.

Cheers  ;D

Hi Cando,

I know this is an old thread but wondered if you knew anything about the parents of your Mary Nelson? Was her father Robert?

I'm looking for the family of Margaret bc 1819 and Martha bc 1824 Nelson who emigrated to Port Phillip in 1841. Their parents were Robert and Mary Nelson. They were born in Donegal but the passenger list gave their native place as Tyrone, so I looked for locations close to the border. There are several possibilities but Strabane/Ardstraw seemed a good fit.

While searching, I also came across a marriage of a John Jack to Elizabeth Nelson in 1845. Do you know if she was your Mary's sister?
