Hi Everyone,
I'm trying to trace the comings and goings of a Janet and Marion Campbell between Glasgow and New York from the late 1920s onwards. Janet was born in 1863 in Glasgow, Scotland as Janet Cullen but may also have been known as Jessie. They emigrated to New York in the 1920s to join Janet's son John and wife Annie but I know they travelled back to Glasgow at least once to visit family here in Glasgow and Hamilton so they may be on the ship logs going back and forth a few times. I haven't found them in the 1930 census so they may have been visiting Scotland at that time. Also Janet actually died in Glasgow, while visiting I presume, in April 1933.
I would be really grateful for any information anyone can find on them. Thanks for any help.
Regards
Michelle

Hello so far found
Name: Janet Campbell Birth Date: abt 1863 Age: 69 Port of Departure: New York, New York, United States Arrival Date: 23 Oct 1932 Port of Arrival: Glasgow, Scotland Ports of Voyage: Londonderry Ship Name: Cameronia
Name: Janet Campbell Birth Date: abt 1864 Age: 67 Port of Departure: New York, New York, United States Arrival Date: 12 Oct 1931 Port of Arrival: Glasgow, Scotland Ports of Voyage: Londonderry, Moville Ship Name: Cameronia Thanks again for emailing those images to me Summersage - that was very kind of you. That is definitely them on the Cameronia arriving 23rd Oct 1932 - the Hamilton address given is the address of other family at the time and the birth years match so that's one down.
I'm also intrigued by the 1931 entry of a Janet around the right age travelling into Glasgow on the Cameronia with a James - I don't know of any James' in the family at the time but I'm interested in the fact they give a Pollockshields address as their residence. My Janet died in Pollockshields in 1933 and I find it quite a mystery as to why she was in Pollockshields when she'd never lived there before going to the US and none of her immediate family that I know of lived there either so hmmmm. It might just be a coincidence though. Someone on another thread directed me to the ancestorsonboard site at findmypast.com and from searching on there I think I've found Marion travelling back to New York from Glasgow on her own on the Transylvania in 1933 which would make sense considering Janet's death. I don't know whether it's worth paying the money for credits so I can see the record though. What I'm really looking for is information on where she would be going when she got to New York and who she planned to stay with. Thanks again for all the help.
Regards
Michelle

The Marion Campbell aged 16 on the Transylvania (June 1933) - if I have the correct one gives her address as 63 Plantation Street, Glasgow. (Also says born Glasgow)

Hi Tressle,
Yes that is my Marion then! The address on Janet's 1933 death certificate was 63 Plantation Street in Pollockshields. Does it give any more information about where she may be going or who she's going to stay with or would that only be done at the New York end? Thanks a lot.

Hi
Sorry I have only got the English End, it has her as born in Glasgow and it has her immigration visa number as 855993, but nothing on the ones that I can see to say who she is going out to.

Hi Tressle,
Thanks for that. Can I ask where you got the information - a website or subscription? Does anyone know if the immigration visa number is helpful for tracing any information?

Just had a look on another site and there is more she is going to her brother John Campbell at 155 East, 107 Street, New York City (Her nearest relative is named as her friend Mrs Mary Tosh? is at 63 Plantation Street, Glasgow) She paid her own fare, and is Fair, Blonde and blue eyed.
I have subscriptions to two different sites, Findmypast and Ancestry.

Wow that's great information! She didn't have a brother John but her uncle was John and I think that was his address on the 1930 census so that would be right. We don't have any picture of her so to know she was blonde and blue-eyed is nice.
I still need to find her going over to New York with Janet in the first place but I've got a lot more now than I started with a few hours ago so thanks all for the great help!
Regards

It says she was in New York last between 1929 and 1932 - date of last departure October if that helps at all.

I don't want to double up on Summersages information, so excuse me if I am giving you what you already have but there is a Janet and Marion Campbell going to New York in February 1930, on the America (aptly enough)
(amending paragraph below as incorrect)
Janet is Grandmother? Housewife and Marion is Pupil, If I have followed the lines across correctly their nearest relative in Scotland is Brother Robert Cullen, Dunoon Scotland, (uncle for Marion), and they are going to see daughter Mrs J Radke.

Hi tressle,
No you're not doubling up on anything - this is the best information I've had in a while! That is definitely them in Feb 1930 as Janet Campbell was born Janet Kerr Stevenson Cullen and had a brother Robert who I didn't know was in Dunoon and the Mrs J Radke daughter part is the most interesting of all as according to family folklore Marion married a man called Radke in New York (presumably some time after her 1933 return!) I'm confused as to whose daughter it says J Radke is though? This also means that I really should have been able to find them on the 1930 census as they would have been in New York by April 1st hmm the plot thickens.
Regards
Michelle

Hi Michelle
I hope you got my email okay, I have amended the paragraph on my last post as I got a bit muddled up as to what was what on the passenger list - put it down to old age....
