I just thought that I would add here that I have completed the first 7 books of the Registers of Leavers now. These cover the period from 1889 to 1919. This should help people searching for police officers that left in these 30 years.

You can find them on the Category:Metropolitan Police Registers Of Leavers.

Good searching, BarnabyP

Hi BarnabyP,
As usual, you've put in a great deal of work to make available these records, well done!

Do you know if there are any ledgers for leavers earlier than 1897?

Best wishes,
Jimmijam

Thanks Jimmijam,

The Registers of Leavers start from 1889, which are the documents that I am working on.

Otherwise I know that the Police Orders (all the MEPO 7s) after a certain period have details of officers who left the force. There are a couple of indexes at the National Archives that can help with some of these. Though it's mostly a search involving patience, from what I can tell.

I think that the Alphabetical Registers of Joiners (MEPO 4/333 - MEPO 4/338) might also detail the date the officers left the force as well as joining. The Alphabetical Register (HO 65/26) covering 1829-1836 does have both those detail.

Forgot to add the Pension Records (MEPO 21s). Some of these have been indexed and can be browsed in the National Archives catalogue.

Others might have more helpful advice.

Yours, BarnabyP

Hi BarnabyP,
Thanks for your reply and the further information.

My best hope is trying to rope a relative into the hunt!

Hi BarnabyP,

Thank you so much for your hard work!!

I found my gt grandfather's entry and leaving and I've finally found his warrant number!!!  :o

Sadly no sign of his pension details. I would expect he would have had a pension as he was a PC for 25 years.

Hi again.

Can you tell us what the column headings read in the Registers of Leavers? They are too blurred on the image to make out.

My gt grandad's reads:

J, 60306, PC, -, Speight George, 2, 7.5, -, -, 6, 1/5/76

What would the 2, 7.5 and 6 mean? I think the 2 refers to 1. Excellent, 2. Very Good. 3, Good, 4. Open, i.e. no comment.

Hello Paul. The columns from left to right are:

  • Division.
  • No. of Warrant.
  • Rank.
  • Class.
  • NAME.
  • No. of Certificate granted to Constable if not Dismissed.
  • When Certificate sent to Division.
  • Number of Documents Constable entitled to according to Regulations.
  • When Documents sent to Division.
  • Date of Removal.
  • Date of Joining.

The 2 is indeed the number of certificate issued - more about on YourArchives. The 7.5 is the date that the certificate was sent (as listed above).

I too would imagine that there is a pension record for George. These are only at The National Archives. Though as you know when he left, it shouldn't be too hard to find if it exists. The pension records are held catalogued under MEPO 21.

Hope that helps, BarnabyP

Hello.

Could someone help me, I have been going through the Police Records trying to find my Grandfather but I can't or I don't know how to use the Records.

The only information I have is that he was a Policeman in 1926 because my father was born in the station and that he must of left befor 1945 because at this time he had moved.

hope some can give me advice on how I could find any information on him.

thank you
k
