Alice Green Ballyfad 1850
« on: Sunday 14 June 09 19:54 BST (UK) »
Where might I go with this ?? To my surprise my ancestor Alice Green was born in Ballyfad Wexford 1850 and died in lancashire.  In meantime she had married twice - once to Andrew Cavanagh and then later to John Greenwood in 1905.  I have looked at some Kilmore records but there are few Green families mentioned.  Eldest daughter born Ireland (connexford ??) 1868 then in Lancashire by 1881.  What chances do i have with such little information ?
regards
Maria

Hello Maria,

It looks as though Ballyfad, near Gorey is in both Inch and Kilnenor Parishes.
http://www.cousinsfamily.co.uk/wexford/townlands.htm

Searching Griffiths Valuation (taken around 1840-1850s)
http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_family_search_results.php?familyname=greene&firstname=john&countyname=WEXFORD&baronyname=&unionname=&parishname=INCH&submit=Start+Searching

there is a John Greene of Ballyfad. (that's the only one).

There are also Kavanaghs around the area but not Ballyfad.

Where do you get the 'connexford' for the eldest daughter? 1881 shows Margaret born Ireland c 1868 and as all Irish births were registered at that time, she should be registered. You have enough information with parents names and county to hopefully get a certificate.

There are some births for Margaret Kavanagh on here http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#birthYear=1868;birthPlace=Wexford%2C%20Ireland;givenName=margaret;searchType=standard;p=recordResults;birthPlaceId=1928899;searchId=74718544258417700000;surname=cavanagh
but as I said with the parents names, it may be possible to get that certificate. This would at least give you a place to confirm Ballyfad perhaps.

Back again,

I should have looked at Family Search IGI

there is an extracted record for Margaret Kavanagh 28 June 1867 Coolgreany Wexford =parents Andrew and Alice Green.

Griffiths Valuation show that a John Kavanagh was living Coolgreany which is also in Inch civil parish.

Thank you very much for all those details -   stupidly i had never thought to look for Kavanagh with a 'k'.    It is great to know details for their daughter - now i may be able to look for andrew and alice themselves.  Are there any other good sources apart from the IGI ?  I am newish to the irish side of family research.  Really appreciate your help.

I think it would be best to apply for certificates if possible.

If they married just around 1866, you should be able to get a marriage certificate. However, I can't see anything suitable in Irish Civil registraration on Family Search pilot.
Perhaps if you got Margaret's certificate, you may get information re the area to search.

If you're interested, I have a number of pics of Ballyfad church. I have ancestors (O'Neill's) that were buried there.

Hello,
I am also looking into Alice Green & Andrew Cavanagh.
The info I have so far (which is probably the same as you do) is:
Married 26/08/1866 in Arklow, Wicklow
Alice's father was John Green. Andrews father was James Kavanagh
Children:
Margaret 1867 - Coolgreaney, Wexford
Catherine 1868 - "                   "
Alice 1871 - Dublin
James 1874 - Widnes, Lancs
Thomas 1877 - "
Annie 1879 - "
Patrick 1881 - "
John 1883 - "
Charles 1886 - "

Andrew died March 1891 (I did note on the '91 census after his death & the family have moved they are living next to a Thomas Green from Ireland, but this may be coincindence).
I will let you know if I find any more info...

I've just been looking at thepip's reply and was really happy to see that my ancestors (O Neill's)who came from Coolgreany lived in Cromwell Street, about one minute away from the Cavanaghs.  Its comforting to think that in the middle of what was a really tough life, they had at least some familiar faces.
