Convict Ann Ryan, Tiperrary to NSW help needed
« on: Monday 15 June 09 12:08 BST (UK) »
Ann RYAN was sentenced at Tipperary in 1795 for a 7 year sentence to NSW penal colony on board "Marquis Cornwallis". I would appreciate any help in finding any information as to what she had done and if where she came from. Her age in NSW shown as 30 years. She arrived NSW 1796.

since very few court records survive the usual method for finding information on a court case or conviction is by using newspaper reports. However very few newspapers were being published at the time of Ann's trial.

The National Library in Dublin has an index of newspapers at this link : http://www.nli.ie/en/newspapers-catalogues-and-databases.aspx

The earliest Tipperary newspapers seem to commence in the 1850s, although there is one that starts publishing in 1813 based in Clonmel (Clonmel Advertiser).

Freemans Journal Dublin was publishing from the early 1760s, but concentrates on the Dublin region. This publication is sometimes available online in libraries through the Gale system - but I believe the data they hold starts in 1800.

Hi.. I found this information on Ann Ryan. She was born in 1765 and was tried in Tipperary in 1795, making her 30 years old. She went to Australia on the Marquis Cornwallis in 1796. Her sentence was for seven years..it does not give what she was tried for though. She lived on the ship with Spouse: lived with Captain Michael Hogan (2) c1798 James Woodham [d 1802]. She died 1805 in Parramatta. I found this information on http://members.pcug.org.au/~ppmay/cgi-bin/irish/irish.cgi?requestType=Search2&id=22593
The surnames, which I am interested in are; Maternal side: Ryan, Kevin, Grant, Grady, Gleeson, Walsh, Dwyer, Paternal side: O' Dwyer, Woodlock, Rochford & Britton - all in Tipperary; and Kelly and Hoynes in Laois.

Ryan, Campbell, Luttrell, Grant, Grahame, Bainbridge and Brown in Queensland, Australia

Tighe in Victoria, Australia.

Grant in Philadelphia, Sullivan and Penny in New York; and Britton in Connecticut

Hi Anderson

I looked in the National Archives Dublin to see if I could find any reference to Ann Ryan transported 1795. She was not shown in the transportation database so I checked the card index to the Petitions for Clemency but did not find any relevant  reference. One of the senior archivists I asked for any possible pointers thought it unlikely that anything would be found  unless there was something in the petitions.
Sorry about that
