Cowie/Maywood/Meninch - Lochee, Dundee
« on: Friday 19 June 09 16:57 BST (UK) »
Looking for any further information on a Robert Hutchison Cowie born 12.11.1892 Lochee Dundee.  His parents were George Hutchison Cowie and Agnes Maywood m 11.10.1889 Lochee Dundee.

Robert married Margaret Black (a widow from Buckhaven, Fife) 8.10.1921 St Giles Edinburgh.  They were both residing at the same place in Buckhaven at the time of their marriage.   Robert's occupation was a Coal Miner and  in 1927/28 Robert was living at Newtongrange, Midlothian (not sure if his family were there also).  Would like to know his whereabouts after 1928 and where/when he died - if indeed he returned to Dundee.

If there is anybody researching the Cowie/Maywood families from Dundee would appreciate their help.

Many thanks
Sheenie

p.s.  I have found that the Maywood/Meninch or Mininch line originates from Ireland.

Hi Sheenie,

I am related to this line. My Grandfather is George Hutchison Cowie, he is a son of the Cowie/Maywood line. I believe that your Robert and my grandfather were brothers.

Hi Lillybell

Thank you so much for replying.   Robert Hutchison Cowie is my Grandfather so we are related.  I am afraid I never knew him or his family so being in touch with another descendant of this family is great.

Since the original posting I have managed to find out that Robert emigrated to Canada in 1928 and that he died in 1973 in Victoria BC.  As I am keen to find out more re his family would it be okay with you if I send you a PM with my e-mail address so that we can correspond direct.

Regards
Sheenie

Hello again Sheenie,

I moved from Dundee to Calgary, Canada about four years ago. I moved house a few months ago and all of my family tree information is packed in boxes. I have a lot on information on the Maywood/Meninch line that I can share with you.

My maiden name is Cowie. George Hutchison Cowie (the one that you are talking about, I think) had a son, George Hutchison Cowie he married Jean or Jane Langlands Ogilvie from Glamis, Angus and they had ten children, one my father. One of his brothers was also called Robert and he died  maybe about 7/8 years ago in Calgary. My father and one aunt are both still alive and here in Calgary. There is one other surviving sister living in Dundee. I will have to find all of my information and share with you. There are a couple of Mininish's still living in Dundee.

Hello Lillybelle,

Look forward to receiving any info you have on the family when you have time - takes a while to get things in order when you move.    My mother is the daughter of Robert Hutchison Cowie - will let you have the background to this at a later date but meantime have briefly outlined info I have on the Cowie family which perhaps you can verify.  Have recently been in contact with one of Sarah Cowie's granddaughters who was able to send me a photo c1927 of Agnes Maywood, Matilda Mininch, Sarah and her daughter Maisie.

George Hutchison Cowie b 1864 Aberdeen d 1939 Dundee m 11.10.1889 in Dundee Agnes Maywood
b 1868 Dundee d 1868 Dundee. Children:
Matilda Hutchison Cowie b 1890 Dundee d 1894 Dundee
Robert Hutchison Cowie b 1892 Dundee d 1973 Victoria BC Canada m (1) Margaret Lindsay or Black and (2) Elizabeth Waddell Orr or McLaren
George Hutchison Cowie b 1894 Dundee d 1961 Dundee m Jane Ogilvy
Henry Maywood Hutchison Cowie b 1897 Perth d 1952 Dundee m Jane Storrier
Ellen McLean Hutchison Cowie b 1899 Dundee
Sarah Jane Auld Hutchison Cowie b 1902 Dundee d 1991 Dundee (1) Martin Sweeney and (2) Peter Craig
Agnes Hutchison Cowie b 1907 Dundee d 1962 Dundee m John Nicoll

Would be interested in any family stories you, your father or aunt can recall.

Kind regards
Sheenie

Hi Lillybelle

I am also one of Sarah Cowie's granddaughters living in Australia. My dad was Peter Craig, Sarah's eldest son born 1933. Maisie was my Aunt from my Granny's first marriege and my dad's other siblings Betty, Ethel, Alf and Harry were from her marriage to Peter Craig.

It was very interesting to read about my other relations as my parents moved to Australia in 1964 and we have had very limited contact with our family in Scotland.

My Granny Sarah was certainly a dynamic woman and visited us in Australia and we saw her a couple of times in Dundee.

Thank you for your information.

Aussie Craig
