Rashee Old Graveyard - Ballyclare
« on: Saturday 20 June 09 11:13 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am looking to put together a list of people who were buried in Rashee Old Graveyard near Ballyclare.

I am researching my family tree and through Death cards I have found a number of people buried there.

There is no register available as far as I know so I though it would be good to try and make a list of people buried there.

If you know of anyone Buried there please post the details here.

Name, Date of Death, Age, Date of Burial and any other information.

Thanks
John

Mary Ann (White) Strange, d. Jan. 23, 1917; buried in Rasheed Old Cemetery Jan. 27, 1917.

Mary Ann was my 2nd great grandmother.  She lived in Ballyclare before her death.  Her husband was Adam Strange.

Flemings at Old Rashee Burying Ground
When I visited Old Rashee Burying Ground in Sept. 2013, there was a gravestone for Richard Fleming of Straypark still standing and listing some of his family buried there with him.
My grandfather's first wife was Mary Agnes Elliott Hume and she was a great granddaughter of Richard Fleming.  Sadly she was on the final voyage of the Lusitania and was lost, her body never recovered.  She was also daughter of Samuel and Agnes Fleming Elliott listed in the Elliott list at Old Rashee.  Here is info I compiled on the Flemings who are known to be at Old Rashee

           Richard Fleming                          b. about 1801  d. 31/12/1878 Straypark
 wife    Agnes Montgomery Fleming         b. about 1805   d. 03/12/1841
 son     John Fleming                              b. about 1831   d. 07/06/1832
 dau    Janet Fleming                             b. about 1833-34  d, 15/01/1846
grandson William Montgomery Fleming    b. about 1862-63  d. 11/01/1870
(Most likely son of John Fleming and first wife Mary Jane Elliott Fleming - need to check Kilbride Records)
son          John Fleming                         b. about 1839    d. 14/04/1918 Kilbride   b. 16/04/1918
first wife  Mary Jane Elliott Fleming        b. about 1834    d. 24/12/1870 Ballyclare
second wife Elizabeth Campbell Fleming b. about 1837    d. 15/05/1911Ballywee b. 16/05/1911
 son         Robert Graham Fleming          b. 09/06/1872   d. 24/06/1879 Ballyclare
 son         Richard Fleming                     b. 30/11/1873   d. 11/05/1903 Doagh   b. 13/05/1903

       Mary Fleming Patton                       b. about 1835   d. 12/12/1901 Ballyclare b. 14/12/1901
(Mary was daughter of Richard and Agnes Fleming)
 husband   Samuel Patton                      b. about 1836    d. 29/10/1901Ballyclare b.  31/10/1901

The will of William Hill of Ballygallough (who died in April 1905) contains the following instruction:

I leave the sum of twenty pounds sterling to be applied by my executors in the erection of a tombstone obelesque shape at the head of the grave of Thomas and Rachel Beggs in Rashee graveyard

The obelisk still exists but it has fallen over.  It is towards the eastern side of the old graveyard.

Yea, here's the obelisk's inscription:

Erected by WILLIAM HILL of Ballygallough in memory of his uncle, THOMAS BEGGS, died 6th June 1885, aged 76 years.  His aunt, RACHEL BEGGS, died 19th October 1903 aged 73 years.  Also the above WILLIAM HILL died 21st April 1905, aged 44 years.

Rachel was William's aunt Rachel Hill who married Thomas Beggs in 1856.  William's father Robert Hill of Ballyalbanagh/Ballynashee died in 1879 when he was thrown from his horse.  His widow Jane was left with 6 children so I imagine a few were sent off to leave with relatives.
