Lists of passengers on of vessels sailing from Hamburg between 1850 and 1934 survive in the Hamburg State Archive [Staatsarchiv], Bestand Auswandereramt. The Family History Library in Salt Lake City has microfilm copies of these manifests, comprising 486 reels, which can be consulted either at the Family History Library itself or at any LDS (Mormon) Family History Center outside Germany (restrictions imposed by the Staatsarchiv Hamburg forbid lending these microfilms to any Family History Center within Germany). That is just the introduction, please go to the link to read the rest. Very informative !

US Passport applications, 1795-1924; Indexes, 1830-1831, 1850-1852, 1860-1925 (Part 01/04)
This is a listing of the microfilm copies made in 1985 by the Genealogical Society of Utah for the Family History Library of original records held at the National Archives in Suitland, Maryland. This copy of index and passport applications is extensive but incomplete. It includes passport applications 1795-1924, and indexes 1830-1831, 1850-1852, and 1860-1925. It corresponds with the National Archives microfilm series M1371, M1372, and M1490. There are 2090 microfilm reels, 16 and 35 mm, in this collection.
Among the emergency and special passport applications were found some passports from 1817 to 1834. These passports were included in chronological order.
The film numbers given in this list are those of the Family History Library. In some cases item numbers within the film are given separated from the film number by a period. Users can use the film numbers to order these films at their local LDS Family History Center. These and the link in my first posting are all from
