Thanks Kanskar,
Very useful site and will become more & more so as households are added. Those involved should be congratulated.
The Foss family is definitely mine and another little piece of the jigsaw is in place.
Best wishes, Toby.

Hi Sandra,
I've got Curtis/Curtice back to 1704 in Downton - in fact, they seemed to have moved back and forth frequently between Downton and Whiteparish.  Am missing a couple of marriages in my direct line but Hebbard also features.
Ermy
Baldwin / Dixey / Rumble (Berkshire)
Burnsides / Corps / Harker / HINDLE / Longstaff / Martin / Page (Co. Durham)
Chalker / Glyde / Morris / Pitman / Stroud (Dorset)
BARTON / Heasman / Wheatley (East Sussex)
Baby / Silver / Silvester (Hampshire)
Cheeseman / JONES / Wood (Kent)
Chalker (Somerset)
Curtis / Davis / Stevens (Wiltshire)
Arcules / Carter / HINTON (Worcestershire)
~.~. main lines in CAPS .~.~

In connection with
http://www.freecen.org.uk  in 1841
and John Foss inn keeper aged 33,
being unfamiliar with the geography and boundaries  of South Wilts., I am confused about whether he was living in Downton or Standlynch. Can anyone put me straight?
Toby.

Hi Toby

I looked at teh census which suggested to me that Standlynch was a parish of Downton, like Redlynch and White PArish so I google mapped it and this is the link

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&tab=wl&q=standlynch

Hope it works, it shows the village of Downton with Standlynch off to the north

Hi again

For some reasonthe link only shows Standlync, once theree click get directions, enter Downton and ther you go. By playing about with the zoom you can get street names, some of which will be familiar like The Borough and The Village.

Sandra,
Thanks for your effort but I am being thick or something. When I get to the head of the family before I select "Show Household", the only option offerred to me is "new query" or "revise query". I cannot find "get directions" anywhere.

Hi Toby

Perhaps I did not make it clear - you either click on my link to Google maps or go direct to google ( tjis is nothiong to do witht he census form itself) Google will show you a map of Stnadlynch which is a VERY small village. If you then select get directions and put Downton iin the to box Google will show you how far Standlynch is from Downton.

Basically Standlynch is a part of Downton in the same way that Brixton is part of London, also it shows in the census header:

Piece: HO107/1174/8 Place: Downton -Wiltshire Enumeration District: 8
Civil Parish: Standlynch Ecclesiastical Parish: -
Folio: 2 Page: 12
Address: -

If you need any more help with the google map send me a PM it will be easier on e mail
