Map Of Brithdir
« on: Friday 03 July 09 08:54 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know where I can find a map of Brithdir showing the location of houses and farms with their names?

Thanks.

Have a look at
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/MER/Dolgellau/index.html
pan down that page to get a list of maps of Dolgellau. If you click on the link to "View maps covering the area of this parish and places within its boundaries "

In particular the Old Maps one has the farm names, but takes a bit of navigating when you try to use it at high magnification (that link will not cut and paste for me, so you need to acess it via the link)

The UK Government Magic Map site is also good and gives present day names rather than 19th cent names. They may or may not be the same.

I would be grateful if the original poster Herblady could contact me, as I have tried and failed via the RootsChat system

I am interested in the Pugh family from the Dolgellau & Llanfachreth area

Corisande,
I tried to reply to your original mail but with no luck - so thank you for this!
My mother was a Pugh from Dolgelley - the family as far as I can make out had origins in Brithdir.
My grandmother (Nain) was a Griffith from Llanfachreth.
How are you connected to the Pugh family?

Thank you for the link to old map link - will have a look and see if I can identify any of the places.

Hi

Thanks for the reply.

My Pughs came fromm Llanfachreth originally. The furthest back I get is a Richard Pugh born Llanfachreth 1788
Web page about Richard Pugh b1788

His son Even Pugh born 1826 lived in Dolgellau
Web page about Evan Pugh b1826

After that they moved to the slate quarries round Corris, Merioneth.

Are you descended from this Hugh Pugh b1822?

Hi Herblady
My Great Grand father Griffith Evans 1851 was a shoe maker in Brithdir, his second wife was Margaret Pugh, I wondered if she could be connected to your Pugh's.  I know Pugh is a common name and its a bit of a long shot.

Hi Rowena

I clicked on to your link and tried to send you a message, but I don't think I managed too.  I'm a bit of a techno phobe.
My Nain was Griffith and his first wife Anne's daughter Elizabeth.

I have a couple of photo's of Griffith and Margaret.

look forward to hearing from you.

regards
Sue (Grace Meowkins)
