INDIA: Mc Callum
« on: Friday 03 July 09 13:00 BST (UK) »
Hi - I'm looking for a Maude MC CALLUM, married to Edward BEADLE in India somewhere. He was born in 1890 in India. They had six children: Mervyn, Lesley, Rowley, Derek, Russell, Kathleen... all born in India.  I have searched FIBIS and FamilySearch, but am having no success, (maybe looking in the wrong place?). I am looking for info about Maude's family - any suggestions on where to look next?

Hi carolineb ;D

What was Edward's  father's occupation that would account for him being in India and his son being born there?

Do you know the approx date of Edward & Maude's  marriage? place in India where marriage occurred?
If we can get a few more pointers then maybe some ideas will flow ;D

Hi Charlotte! Edward's Dad Amos Beadle went to India from UK sometime around 1870, he was in the military (53rd Field Battery Royal Artillary). Amos got married to Nancy Russell in Bombay in 1887. Not too sure when Edward and Maude would have been married, but Edward was born in 1890 and one of his children born in 1925, not sure about the others. Edward had a second marriage as well, to Martha Conrad (I think), possibly Calcutta area. (havent got onto that yet - wanted to get Maude sorted out!)
thanks!  :)

Oh yes another thing... Maude Mc Callum died quite young - probably around 1930, in India.

Hi again, Death in India of wives and children of soldiers and other Europeans was very common...in some cemeteries you can read the headstones for 1st and 2nd wife of so-and-so etc.

That Amos married in Bombay may indicate that Nancy followed hi there by arrangement and they married when the ship docked- I have one like that.
Are you interested in Nancy and Amos or just in Edward and Maude?

Hi Charlotte
Pretty crucially, i have found out that Maude was in fact called Kathleen Maude, and was one of the daughters of a Rolyn Mac Callum of the Telegraph services and his wife Mary. Maude and Edward got married on 16 Feb 1916 at Lahore.

Amos was born in Keston, Kent in 1851, possibly to George Beadle and Elizabeth Richardson. Nancy was the daughter of John and Harriet Russell. I would like to find out more about both of their parents too!

Hi again,

if you are going to work backwards and the people are in Uk, you'd best post on the county boards as appropriate and post here for those in India...

The telegraph services would have been an important part of the running of India before Partition.

Do you think the 6 kids remained in India?

It was common for kids whose parents worked in India to be sent "home" for schooling from about the age of six years.   You can't prove this happened unless it happneded ina censusss time- not applicable in your timeframe here- but if this happened to your six it may mean they remained on in England and married there.
