Architects during the 1800s
« on: Friday 03 July 09 13:55 UTC (UK) »

Bit of a quandary, having just received my 3 X grandfathers Marriage Cert, One John Charles Everett 21, a Seaman, by occupation, to one Sarah Jane Williams on 26/04/1870, it obviously names my 4 X grandfathers, namely one Edward Everett whose occupation is given as Architect, as the majority of my Ancestors are Agricultural Laborers, Laborers or Navel Personnel it was a pleasant surprise, but having difficulty locating an Edward Everett with an occupation as a Architect in any of the Census's, prior to this date or future dates, as John Charles was I believe born in London, about 1850, but married in Hartlepool, I am presuming that Edward was working in London, would anyone know of anyway to find records of Architects of this period, as I am assuming an Architect would have been quite a prestigious occupation at that time.

You could try searching trade directories - there are several on the Historical Directories site covering periods from the late 1700s to the early 1900s
http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/
The main professional body now is RIBA - I don't know their history, but you may find something via their website

The Scottish Dictionary of Architects has a Maurice Everett Webb  "of London", born 1880, but gives no more detail apart from  the names of three others he nominated for RIBA associateships in the 1920's and 30's - Samuel Davidson, Basil Ionides and Thomas Smith Shearer.

By 1860s in Yorkshire those who wished to become architects were articled to an exisiting architect and worked under his direction.   This was the case for my grandfather- his obit helpfully mentioned  the name of the man to whom he'd been articled which is how I learned about this process. I imagine there were  exams somewhere along the line before they were accredited?

But the question remains as to how your chap got himself articled and then accredited.

I have pages of stuff about my Bonnin ancestor who was a builder, the only named architect he worked with was Basevi.
I got it from British History Online, this is the only link I have.

You might be able to do a search there.
Good luck,
Leonie.

Hi

My gt. grandfather was an architect in Birmingham from the 1870's to 1910's.   I have been lucky that i found someone online who was a fan of his work and sent me loads of information as well as petitioning to restore some of his houses which unfortunatly have been damaged due to arsonists.  In the earlier census's he may be down as a clerk as that is what my grandfather was down as although he was a architects clerk at the time i got this from the trade directories such as Kellys.  RIBA may be able to help as they were around in the 1870's you might find something on the british newspapers search on british library site i found lots on my ancestor and architecture there.
The person who researched my ancestor gave me a list of houses my ancestor got planning permission for it gave me addresses and people who he built the houses for he got these from the Birmingham Architectural association annual reports and the Birmingham city registers i don't know if there is London equivilents i imagine there is.

You are right it was a good profession i know my Gt grandfather built a big house for his family had a few servants and left a lot in his will he also sent his children to a very good fee paying private school so i am guessing he made a lot of money.

Hope this helps a bit

I have a 19th century relative from a family of ag labs, harness makers and the like who became an architect and surveyor - he upped and went to London to work.  Haven't been able to find out much about him tho.
