Christopher Murray Co. Armarg
« on: Sunday 05 July 09 07:16 BST (UK) »

Hi,

For years family  has been said that Christopher Murray c. 1856 was born Rathmines  Dublin Ireland.

Now with access to the 1911 census I find that his place of birth is listed as Ireland, Co Armagh -
can anyone tell me where I go from here.

He married in Salford 1876 - the R.C church records for this gave his parents as Thomas and Bridget Murray.

This is on my father's side of the family and unfortunately I started looking after my dads death in 1990 - since then his only two remaining siblings have passed away - giving me no further info.

Any help at all would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi:

I have just seen your post, not sure that I can be too much help but I'll give you what I know. Christopher Murray was my Great Grandfather I am descended from his second son Robert. I have a copy of his marriage certificate - this is what started me on this quest. The certificate is a copy dated  1902 i.e 26years after their wedding, I wonder why it was needed. I haven't investigated the Irish connection yet but will keep you informed of any findings.

Regards

Andy (Murray)

hi
I noticed where Christopher Murray married there was another Murray Michael Murray who had the same parents names. He married an Elizabeth Hooley at a similar time 187*. But I noticed Elizabeth Murray married a Mccann not long after and realised Michael Murray had died young before the 1881 census. you can find these facts from lan-opc website. Michael had no children. i cant prove Michael was related to Christopher but he may be.

I double checked the english records for any further irish clues

1871 England census there is a    Albert Street Altrincham Cheshire Christopher Murray b Ireland with a son christopher b Cheshire 1854 I think a red herring

1881 England census Dale St Salford
Christopher  Murray railway signalman b 1856
Mary Ann Booth b Salford  1855 a cotton trimmer
children all b Salford
Emily 1879
Christopher 1881

1891 England census address change living at Earl Street  Parish   Pendleton

1901 England census census
13 Rodney street salford
Christopher  Murray railway signalmanb 1856
Mary Ann Booth b Salford  1855 aged 46 to his45 incotton trimmer
 children all b Salford
Emily 1879
Christopher 1881
Eliza 1883
Robert 1885 canal boatman m and takes in brother Austin in 1911 census
Maffie 1886   margaret in 1891 in digs with Joseph in 1911
Thomas1888
Austin 1890 Augustine in 1891 census
Joseph 1892
Mary Ann 1894 football maker 1911

1911 England Census looks like Mary Ann Murray the mother has died 1902 and Christopher in infirmary died later 1919 both in freebmd if I have identified correctly useing freebmds
Switching to Ireland
England census 1911 gives the Co Armagh clue
Thomas and Bridget Murray.[‘pn’ from Salford RC records which may help the most in the irish search assuming Thomas himself and son Christopher was catholic]
children
Christopher Murray c. 1856 Co Armagh

I searched unsuccessfully for Christopher’s civil birth and church baptism on https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/

trying Griffiths Valuationabout 1860s  there are Murrays living in the following civil parishes in Co Armagh
Armagh Ballymore Clonfeacle Creggan Derrynoose Drumcree Eglish Keady
Kilclooney Killevy Kilmore Lisnadill Loughgall Loughgilly Montiaghs Mullaghbrack
Newry Newtownhamilton Seagoe Shankill Tartaraghan Tynan  ‘. that is a lot of parishes
even for Murray.  Selecting just Thomas presuming Thomas the father has his own place, the results are
Murray   Thomas   Doohat or Crossreagh   Derrynoose   Armagh
Murray   Thomas   Crossbane         Derrynoose   Armagh
check how close those townlands are to Annaghmore station
Murray      Thomas   Clady Beg         Kilclooney   Armagh
Murray   Thomas   Tullyvallan         Newtownhamilton   Armagh
Murray   Thomas   Turmoyra         Seagoe   Armagh
Murray   Thomas   Township of Lurgan Rooneys Lane   Shankill   Armagh
Murray   Thomas   Ballynarry         Tartaraghan   Armagh
The above parishes except possibly Kilclooney, have railways running through them.  Railway stations at this time taken from maps around 1862 include the following stations in alph‘ order
Adavoyle Station
Armagh Itself [North]
Bessbrook
Goraghs Wood
Hamiltons Bawn
Killylea ,close to Armagh itself
Loughgilly Starion
Lurgan
Markets Hill
Newry Albert Basin Area
Newry Out On West Side
Portadown.
Richhill
Tynan Railway Station, Coolkill Road, Tynan

Thomas’s son Christopher is a young railway signalman in England  who possibility learnt their trade and emigrated to England for a better post .  if that was the case for your Christopher one would need need to live within walking distance of a railway station to learn your trade.. I have come across the experience of three signalmen hence me going into detail . if you face a brick wall and have the time it’s a possible way of narrowing the Thomas above down three or four places . even then you need without a church record problems arise

so I cant help further, hope others join in.  Good luck
