Wittick Green, around Bletsoe BEDS ??
« on: Saturday 26 February 05 14:17 GMT (UK) »
Can anybody give any information about a locality known as Wittick Green, or Wittock Green, somewhere around the village of Bletsoe in Bedfordshire?

I suspect it may have been a farm or some kind of rural district. Several generations of my ROWNEY family seem to have lived there working as agricultural labourers throughout the 19th century, and some of the children used the name as their place of birth, so it would seem that it might have been more substantial than a simple farm. A Google search turns up nothing at all.

I can access www.oldmaps.co.uk for an old map of Bletsoe, so any advice which might help me locate Wittick Green on the map would be ideal.

Many thanks,
Marc

Hi Mark,
looking at my (circa 1968 - cost 3 shillings) map of Bedfordshire, there's a place called Whitwick Green, to the north-east of Bletsoe. The road seems to just end at a set of buildings. Looking at the same area using www.streetmap.co.uk ( ref 503500,258500 ) it is not mentioned.
It was & still is as, you say a rural, farming community. It's about 15 minutes from my house.

hope this is of interest to you

Thank you very much John. Whitwick Green is actually more substantial than I had thought. Both a farm and a district. It's clearly marked on the old map from 1886-1888 with the spelling you indicated. A bit further from Bletsoe than I had looked. Google also has several references to "Whitwick Green".

Thanks again for your help,
Marc

My Uncle of 4th Great Grand Uncle (Nicholas King) was a Pauper - Agricultural Labourer, living with Edward Rowney, his wife Elizabeth (nee Childs) and their family of Sarah, William and Thomas in the 1881 Census.
