From memory on Ken's original post, there were will & testament entries for both son William and wife Margaret.

Well things have certainly moved on in the last couple of days, there's getting to be quite a spread now.I was most intrigued by Lodger's poem, is there any chance of getting a copy of the complete poem, as the names have spread quite a bit? I've been surprised with the amount of information the area has thrown up compared with other parts of the country that I've been researching. I'm sure it must be the quality of the other researchers I've become involved with. Many thanks to you all.
Regards
Ken

There is an OPR baptism for a William Meikle, 9 December 1733 to a Robert Meikle and Margaret Weir living in Kellylees. The date is close to the age for the death of a William in 1822, but not exact, and in the age range of the 1821 census.

I found an interesting site on the Meikles on Donald Macleods Genealogy Pages. It's home.xtra.co.nz/amkwil.html. It's well worth a look, especially with regards to Robert Meikle and Margaret Weir.

Hi Monica,
I found it by typing "Kellylees Lesmahagow" into Google. Donald Macleods Genealogy Pages was on the first page. There's a small tree on there, but all the interesting stuff appeared by clicking on "Names".

Hi Guys

My other half is a direct descendent of Robert Meikle and Agnes Stobo. Unfortunately he has not been able to get details of Robert's parents but does have Agnes's.

Agnes was born 18/5/1770 in Stonehouse to James Stobo and Martha Alison.

Children of Robert and Agnes were

- William Meikle, b.27/9/1801, Kypewaterhead; d.17/4/1872, Kypewaterhead
- James Meikle, b.27/12/1803, Kypewaterhead
- Robert Meikle, b.9/11/1805, Kypewaterhead
- John Meikle, b.12/7/1808, Kypewaterhead
- Martha Meikle, b.20/11/1815, Kypewaterhead; d.5/6/1857, Kypeside

Some of the dates in these posts almost go back to the days of the '45.    So this extract may be relevant especially if anyone knows that their Meikle was a carpenter:

"Among the unfortunate victims of the rebellion of 1715, there
was none more lamented, and none whose untimely fate created
greater sympathy, than the young and gallant Macdonald of
Kinloch-Moidart, who was surprised and arrested, while passing
the night in Lesmahago, by a young clergyman of the name of
Linning, and one Meikle, a carpenter. It has been often stated
that Kinloch-Moidart was on his way to join the army of Prince
Charles Edward, or that he was the bearer of despatches, which
would have justified his arrest; but the fact was, that in conse-
quence of bad health, he had left the Highland army, and was
returning home accompanied by a single servant, a state of
circumstances which should have protected him, even amid the
virulent feelings excited by a civil war; while the motives of his
captors were well illustrated by the loud complaints which were
subsequently made by them and their friends, that they were
not sufficiently rewarded by the Hanoverian Government. It is
some satisfaction to learn that the forces of Prince Charles
Edward, when they, on their retreat from Preston to Glasgow,
occupied Lesmahago, burnt down the house of Meikle. "

Thanks for the titbit. I have a Thomas Meikle b1670 from Lesmahagow, who was married to Bessie Couper, but I'm not sure of his occupation. They had 6 children, Robert, Margaret, Robert, Marion, Thomas and William. The facts you gave are certainly worth adding to the family facts, just in case they are the correct family.
A note for Tracy (sorry I missed your query before) but Robert Meikle's parents were William b1733 in Lesmahagow and married Agnes Craig b1737, Avondale, dau. of John b1700 and Agnes Campbell.
William's parents were Robert b1706 who married Margaret Weir b1708. Robert's parents were Thomas and Bessie Couper, who I referred to at the start of this reply.
Hope this helps
