Glasgow and suburbs obits
« on: Saturday 26 February 05 19:20 GMT (UK) »
Hey all,

Three questions which require some familiarity with Glasgow area papers:

1. Does anyone know if the Glasgow newspapers tended to print obits or death notices around 1909 for people who were not particularly famous or important?

2.Is there a particular Glasgow paper which is better than the others for obit searches?

3. Did Giffnock have a local suburban paper in 1948?

Thanks!

1. No
2. Glasgow Herald or more likely The Scotsman (more National than local though)
3. Probably ... I'll try and find out.

For a search around the second date of 1948 the the Glasgow Evening Times may be a better bet...... possibly 1909 as well but I'm not sure how old it is.

Other papers have come and gone.

Thanks!

The 1909 death was in Glasgow.  The 1948 person died in Glasgow but was a resident of Giffnock so it seems more likely she'd have an obit there.

Re Giffnock Newspaper .... I've been unable to get a straight answer .....  (so much for phone a friend  ;D ) ..... my contact claims that the "Jewish Telegraph"  IS the Giffnock local paper ...... possibly in connection with the large jewish populations of Giffnock and Newton Mearns.

However this information from the Eastwood website should provide someone for you that could answer your questions
