Hello

There is one James in Manitoba. A James Willox born Scotland living in District 12, Selkirk, Subdistrict 26, Manitoba with mother and siblings. All immigrated in 1911 and born Scotland. Presbyterian. All children single.

Place of Habitation: Township 22, Range 4, Meridian 1
Margrette Willox  head mother widow 50 farmer
George son in military services overseas transcribed for James in error and looks like Belgain, but believe it should be Belgium 25 soldier
James son in military services overseas England  23 soldier
Alexander son in military services Canada at Winnipeg 21 soldier
Fanny daughter 19 no occupation
Eleanor daughter 18 no occupation

James attestation papers has his father as next of kin and are signed in 1918 after the 1916 census. Could widow for Margrette be an error, or this is not your James. Do you know of any other family members?

Hello

Alexander born August 26, 1995 Aberdeen, Scotland and George born July 12, 1891 Aberdeen both list mother Margret as next of kin on their attestation papers. Alexander's forms indicate he is in Winnipeg. Mother's address Brickdale, Manitoba. Your James lists his birthplace as Aberdeenshire.

Sailing information for James:

James Willox(21), single, destination Harding, Manitoba, to work as a farmhand - worked the same occupation in Scotland.  Sailed Glasgow to Quebec on Cassandra arriving June 9, 1913.

James Willox arriving back from WWI on the Northland which landed Halifax May 22, 1919.  Residence he was going to was Harding and he listed his next of kin as his father.

James Willox(35), single, b. Aberdeen Scotland.  In Canada since May(?) 1913  to 11/12 1927 Harding Manitoba (the ? was the records not mine)
Occupation Farming.  Returning home Lenora Manitoba - brother Mr. Ernest Alexander.  Father listed as next of kin - Alexander Willox Mossslide(?) Whitehall New Piteligo.

It would appear that his father was still living in 1927

There is an online ancestry tree for Fanny Willox which has more details of this family.  They use the same 1916 census reference as quoted here.

Siblings of James Anderson Willox were Fanny, Annie, George, Eleanor Frater, Alexander Stuart and parents Margaret Anderson and Alexander Minty Willox.

Family definately did not sail together.

Margt (age 45 married), Alex (11), Fanny (14) and Ellanor (10) immigrated together. Sailed on the S.S. Saturnia arriving March 8, 1911 at St. John, NB. Departure point was Glasgow. Their destination Morden, Manitoba. Margt a housewife going to husband. George immigrated arriving March 29, 1910 at Halifax, N.S., sailing on S.S. Ionian from Glasgow. Destination Morden. All family members above immigrated as part of the British Bonus Allowed scheme.

Very confusing with Margt going to husband in 1911 and her found on 1911 census without husband at home. She is listed as a married woman.

The 1911 census was taken June 1st and Margret is head of household, married living Ninth St., Morden, MB.  Son James nor her husband are found on this census.

I am also not sure James is son of Margt, as he lists his father as Alexander. Wonder if on the 1916 census, James is maybe another relation, possibly nephew to Margt and not son . Looking too long at the screen, missed father as Alexander Minty Willox.

It would appear that James father immigrated between his attestation sign-up and return from overseas duty in May 22, 1919 and will not be on a Canadian census. James will only be on 1916, immigrating in 1913. Can't seem to see father Alexander on 1911 nor 1916 census.

Do you know of a family tie to Margt, Margret, Margaret?

James Willox's attestation papers (http://www.rootschat.com/links/06p8/) indicate he was born 25 Mar 1892 in Aberdeen. At ScotlandsPeople there is a birth for a James Willox born 25 Mar 1892 in Strichen, Aberdeen to Alexander Willox and Mary Stephen. His twin sister Christian's birth registration is on the same page as James.

On the 1901 census for Lambhillock, Old Deer, Aberdeenshire there is the following family:

Alexander Willox, head, 45, born Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, farm servant (cattleman)
Mary Willox, wife, 50, born Strichen, Aberdeenshire
Jane Willox, daughter, 11, born Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire
James Willox, son, 9, born Strichen, Aberdeenshire
Christian Willox, daughter, 9, born Strichen, Aberdeenshire
Robert B Willox, nephew, 2, born Maryculter, Aberdeenshire

This would eliminate the James on the 1916 census in Selkirk.

By the way there is a death for a Mary Willox, other surname Stephen, age 60 at SP that was registered in 1911 in Savoch, Aberdeenshire. There is also a death for Alexander Barclay Willox, age 77, who died 27 Jan 1934 in Whitehall, New Deer, Aberdeenshire. He is listed as being the widower of Mary Stephen and his parents were Charles Willox and Mary Main. His nephew Robert Barclay Willox was the informant.

There is an incoming UK passenger list entry that corresponds with the 1927 entry. James Willox departed from Saint John, New Brunswick and arrived in Glasgow on 19 Dec 1927. The address he was going to in the UK was Mosside, Whitehall, New Pitsligo. His occupation was farming and his county of last permanent residence was Canada and his future intended permanent residence is checked under the column "other part of the British Empire".

Sailing information for James:

James Willox(35), single, b. Aberdeen Scotland.  In Canada since May(?) 1913  to 11/12 1927 Harding Manitoba (the ? was the records not mine)
Occupation Farming.  Returning home Lenora Manitoba - brother Mr. Ernest Alexander.  Father listed as next of kin - Alexander Willox Mossslide(?) Whitehall New Piteligo.

By the way, the ship that James returned on was the Athenia which arrived in Halifax on 11 Mar 1928. The reference to a brother named Ernest Alexander was for the entry after James (a person named Arthur Alexander). James' entry just says "returning home - Lenore, Manitoba". By the way, Lenore and Harding are less than 20 km apart. Both are located in the Rural Municipality of Woodworth.
