1851 Lookup Please
« on: Tuesday 14 July 09 07:23 BST (UK) »
I am seeking a transcription of a family in Arbroath in the 1851 census.
They are John (1787) & Agnes Ramsay(1789).
I am curious to know John's place of birth and his occupation, and also anybody else who is in the house with them.
Thank you.
Chris.

A visit to the ScotlandsPeople website and a few credits will take you straight to the record, - search on the basis of a 62 to 66 year old John RAMS?Y with "second person forename" as Agnes and there's just one match.   There's one other person in the household.

The 1841 census gives three presumed daughters.

FamilySearch.org will give you more details and more kids, but you will need to sort the extracted records from the submissions of LDS member

Hi Monica,
Yes that's them. Thank you for the lookup.
Now that I know John's place of birth I can have a bit of a search for his baptism entry. I know he died in 1861 so I can purchase his death record too and confirm his parents.
Thank you.
Chris.

Hi Chris

Given the names of John and Agnes (Adamson)'s children, there is this submitted IGI entry which looks likely:

John Ramsay  Christening: 16 APR 1787 Arbirlot, Angus
Parents:Francis Ramsay and Marion Cary

His death cert info will hopefully let you confirm  :)

:) There is also listed an acutal extract from the OPRs with parents as FRANCIS RAMSAY and MARYAN CAREY, same date for the christening.

Death records can sometimes be a problem, as the mother's name is shown as MARY RAMSAY MS CRAIG; the informant was a nephew.

Given the slightly unusual given name of the father, exactly the right place, - Arbirlot (as per the 1851 census), - and exact age match, it looks like it was in fact CAREY.
