OBITUARY
A very old and respected identity of Maryborough in the person of Mrs Elizabeth Wells, relict of the late Mr William Wells, passed away last night at the residence of her grand-daughter, Mrs H. Specht, Newtown, at the venerable age of 88 years and 9 months. She was born in County Armagh, Ireland, and came out to Queensland with her husband in the ship 'Montmorency' 55 years ago, landing at Bowen, then known as Port Denison. Three years later they came on to Maryborough, where Mrs Wells had resided ever since, her husband having predeceased her about 44 years ago.
She had a family of eleven children, of whom two sons and four daughters are dead (including the late Mr Samuel Wells, of Bundaberg, a noted athlete and long distance runner in his young days in this town). The surviving children are two sons and three daughters, namely, Alderman William Wells, Mr James Wells (both of this city), Mrs R. H. Whitehead (Bundaberg), Mrs W. Wilson (Maryborough), and Mrs J. McCarthy (Brisbane). There are also 33 grandchildren and 56 great-grandchildren.
The deceased lady had enjoyed good health until about three months ago when she met with an accident which sapped her strength and she had since been in declining health. The funeral takes place this afternoon, and the business premises of Messrs W. Wells and Sons will be closed all day.
