Deciphering the impossible - Marriage cert of George Lawrence
« on: Wednesday 15 July 09 15:37 BST (UK) »

Can anyone extract any information of this portion of a marriage certificate. I had to cut a lot off to be able to download however the grooms name is George Lawrence and the bride is Sarah Allison. They married in Oct 1843 possibly in London, looks like Middlesex on the certCannot make out the grooms profession, residence at time of marriage or anything to do with the fathers
Many thanks
Lottee

Not very good is it?

My starter:
Parish of St Magargets ???  Middlesex
Batchelor      Col?????man     Tolhile St
Spinster                                 Great Smith Street

Church of England by Banns

As you say fathers' details are illegible

Hi

Parish of St Margarets, Westminster? Middlesex.  (near Great Smith Street).

It looks like the fathers' details are completely missing  ::) ;D

Kind regards

Thanks both of you. It is pretty awful isn't it and it cost me the usual £7 for no more information than I already had as it was the fathers details I was after.  I think St Margarets looks pretty likely and I agree with the street names. I need to look at an old map to see if these streets exist.  As to his profession well who knows  ??? Still every little bit helps thanks

I'd say Tothill Street

And that both fathers names are blank i.e both are illegitimate.  Handy - no need to make up a dad's name to impress new spouse!

His occupation has me stumped at the mo

modified - well done MAureen!

It is colourman, I'm sure, and a colourman mixed paints (for artists or housepainters) or dyes for the textile industry.  You may be able to guess which by looking at the 1841 or 1851 censuses and looking to see what occupations his neighbours had
Perrins - Manchester and Staffs
Honan - Manchester and Ireland
Hogg - Manchester 19 cent
Anderson - Newcastle mid 19 cent
Boullen - London then Carlisle then Manchester
Comer - Manchester and Galway
