Arthur Henry Farmer - Shinfield
« on: Sunday 19 July 09 22:14 BST (UK) »
Anyone with any information about Arthur who was a groom at Shinfield Lodge, Reading in 1917.  His nickname was "Brish".

His wife was Ruby Green.

I would be interested to know what "brish" comes from  ??? - and if you have any information about Arthur and his family. :)

I see they married in the Wokingham Regn District in 2Q of1906 (Volume 2c,  Page 893 )
She was Ruby Maud Green.

In 1901 theres an Arthur Farmer born 1885, Micheldever, Hants in the East Shinfield Parish, a General Farm Labourer working for a Farmer named MacArthur Duff ...

RG13/1155; Folio: 106; Page: 30
Wyverley Farm - Hyde End

Theres 6 Arthur Farmers in the Berks census, 3 are married in 1901 - another candidate is an Arthur actually born in Shinfield, 1871 - he's in Reading St Giles, but I've just noticed he's a Printers Cutter....

The last one is with parents in Wantage - but he's an Arthur T.

If you want the chap traced back to Micheldever, let me know.

The 1911 census might help locate where they actually were 5 years after marriage ....

No idea how you'd find out the source of a nickname tho !

I can't believe how quickly you replied  - thank you so much!

Yes - that's right - I have Arthur and Ruby's son Douglas Charles's birth cert.  He was born in **** in Lambert - though I have thought that they were Reading people.  He had 2 older brothers.... the oldest being Arthur and the other Cyril.

Douglas married Susie Gallagher in St Giles Church, Reading in ****.

Arthur Henry was a stud groom of Shinfield Lodge, Reading on Douglas's birth cert.  I always imagined this was on a big estate where they bred horses - though I don't know! :-\

Maybe Arthur was a family name going back generations especially since Arthur Henry called his first son Arthur too.

If this Arthur b. 1885 Micheldever is a Arthur Henry then yes - it would be great if you could add even more to the scant info I have!!! ;D

Hi - I think I have the right man; in the 1911 census his Year of Birth is 1885 ! Also 2 sons - I didnt copy all the info from the 1911 Index-only search, but one son was a Cyril, and Ruby had her full name specified. So that would deffo be the family - in the Wokingham District (not sure how far towards Reading etc that spanned in those days)

To get full details of his address and occupation you would have to buy credits on the 1911 website.

Theres a Birth Index entry for ARTHUR HENRY in the 4Q of 1884, Winchester District, so that agrees with the PoB of Micheldever that he stated in the 1901 census.

Harder to find in 1891 as the surname was transcribed FARMES by the search engine (clearly Farmer on the handwritten original) ! and his Family were already in the Shinfield area  ..... he now says his PoB was Northbrook, and looking at a map, thats actually part of Micheldever.

Heres the 1891 family :-

1891 - RG12/1000; Folio 60; Page 9 - Parish of Shinfield, (Town of Reading ? )
'Three Mile Cross' - next to the Swan Inn

Henry Farmer 44  Head Agricultural Labourer born Hants, possibly Selbourne (badly smudged)
Ann Farmer 28  Wife possibly Selbourne
Arthur Farmer 6  son Hants NorthBrook (Micheldever)
Matillda Farmer 4  dau ditto
Lousia Farmer 2  dau ditto

Thomas Ballard 36  Lodger
Alfred Marshall 25  Lodger

couldnt find an obvious Marriage ....  see next post.

If you use a 'search engine' like GOOGLE and look for Shinfield House, theres a reference to the Estate being sold in 1904 - I didnt read the whole article, so dont know what happened to it after that when Arthur would have been around.

Let me know if you want to try and trace his Dad Henry back ?

Kind Regards, PM

Based on the 1901 census, (and note that Henry & spouse's PoBs are now clear) ...

RG13/1155; Folio: 98; Page: 14 - Shinfield
Ryshe Green

Henry Farmer 52  Head Feeder to Traction Engine  born Hants, Hurstbourne*
Sarah A Farmer 39  Wife 'Looking after Children' Hants, Tichbourne
Louisa Farmer 12  dau Shinfield
Daisy B Farmer 7  dau do
Charles Farmer 5  son do
Henry Farmer 2  son do

Thomas Ballard 40  Lodger

* Hmmmm - could be Hurstbourne Priors (Whitchurch District) or Hurstbourne Tarrant (Andover)

I think this must be their Marriage ..

Marriages Dec 1883

FARMER  Henry    Winchester  v2c p183   to   SPRANGLE  Sarah Ann

Sarah is elusive so far on the census, suspect her surname has been sprangled    ;)

Births Jun 1862

SPRANGLE  Sarah Ann    Alresford  v2c p129

She's not showing as a Sarah / Ann / Sprangle in 1871 or 1881 ...

I'm wondering her dad died and Mum remarried - she's a good fit for a family in 1871, who have Sprangle step kids - headed by John Money - who married a Harriet Sprangle:-

Marriages Mar 1865

Money  John    Alresford  v2c p208    to    Sprangle  Harriett

In 1871 John Money has this Household:-

1871 - RG10/1224; Folio: 26; Page: 1 - New Alresford
Pound Hill

John Money 48  Head Groom Bishops Sutton
Harriett**  Money 32  Wife Old Alresford
Charles Money 12  son Bishops Sutton
John Money 10  son do
Alfred Money 7  son New Alresford
Rosa H Money 5  dau do
Sarah Ann Money 3  dau do
Frederick W Money 6 months  son do

James Sprangle 10  Stepson Bishops Sutton
Ellen Sprangle 7  StepDau New Alresford

Sarah Ann would fit in between James and Ellen (who IS Ellen - theres a Birth Entry)

** Harriet was a single woman in the 1861 census, in service in Hinton Ampner

Anyway, thats just one option - will keep looking for her in 71 / 81

Turning to Henry Farmer, showing Hurstbourne as his PoB in 1891 and 1901 ...

From the 1851 to 1881 census these are the only actual Hurstbourne 'fit':-

1871 - RG10/1240; Folio: 7; Page: 5; - Abbots Ann / Andover District

Lodging with the Horne Household - an Ag Lab / carter

and:-

1881 - RG11/1253; Folio: 22; Page: 37 - Hartley Wintney
Poulters Farm

John Farmer 53  Head Ag Lab born Hants, Hurstbourne
Mary Farmer 51  Wife Hants, Woodcutt (Kingsclere District ?)
Henry Farmer 32  son (no marital status) Ag Lab Hurstbourne
Thomas Farmer 28  son do do
Elizabeth Farmer 18  dau Chittinbottam (Chilbolton ?)
Alfred Farmer 12  son Penton
Albert Farmer 10  son Eggbury
Arthur Farmer 7  son Odiham
