Maybe you could narrow down the dates a little.  What censuses do you have them on, what date is the document ?

Well you say his age is given as 38 or 39, if that was from an 1881 census then it would make him born approx. 1843-ish but if from the 1901 census then the birthdate would be 1863-ish, which makes a big difference.

If he signed up as a single man then that would be the point to start looking, but we don't know what date that was, maybe you do .... If you have him with wife on a census then then that would be the date to stop looking, but we don't know that, again maybe you do .....

Looking at the family in 1881:

RG11 1783 56 4
Alma Sq Mistley

Robert 29 Journeyman Butcher bn Mistley
Eleanor 29 bn Bradfield
Arthur 10 bn Manningtree
Frederick 7 bn Mann.
Charles E 5 bn Mann.

I would say this is them in 1891, though Charles Edward is known as Edward. With grandmother.

Rg12 1403 163 12
South Street, MAnningtree

Mahala Young 64 widow
Frederick 17 grandson Butcher
Edward 15 grandson gen labourer
Nellie grandaughter

all bn Manningtree

Sadly this looks as to the reason why they are with grandmother:

Death
Jan/Feb/Mar 1887
Tendring 4a 266
Eleanor Young age 34

Death
Oct/Nov/Dec 1888
Tendring 4a 245
Robert Young age 35
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex
