What a wonderful person he was - I loved to listen to his gentle Somerset voice.

Sad news indeed.

I seem to remember that there was some debate, (a few years ago now) that the last surviving WW1 Veteran should have a State Funeral.

I wonder if Harry Patch will get one? (I saw the tribute from Prince Charles on Sky News).

Romilly.

Harry Patch - last WW1 veteran

Another slice of history has gone with the death today of 111-year-old Harry Patch, our last WW1 veteran, the oldest man in Europe and third oldest in the world.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8168691.stm

What a character he was, outliving his two sons and three wives!  It's fascinating that he never talked about his wartime experiences for more than 80 years, until he realised that he was fast becoming one of the only men to recall and record those dreadful times.

I love the fact that he became an agony uncle for FHM magazine at his advanced age (around 100?).  I guess he'd seen enough of life by then to be able to advise on most problems. ;D

How very sad.  The  final link,  in a way,  to my own Unclse Patrick,  KIA 14th. July, 1916.  No known grave and remembered upon the Thiepval memorial.   Harry Patch always told it as it was,  no romantic poetic nonsense,  just barbarism personified by the brutal sacrifice of ill educated and poor working class lads.

Harry,  God bless and keep you,  we owe you and all your comrades a debt that can never be fully paid or even understood.

I feel that the world seems more lightweight with no one left in it who fought in the Great War. They left us a huge legacy to live up to.
