MOORE Families?
« on: Tuesday 28 July 09 01:11 BST (UK) »
This is the first time I have looked for MOORE families who lived in the Isle of Man.

The furtherest back I have gone is James Moore born c1775
who married an Elizabeth COPP  born 1782 Brixham in 1808 Brixham Devon.

Their children were all born in Seaton & Beer Devon.

My cousin has just told me there were three boys who were orphaned & were looked after in Seaton & Beer Devon.  One went to USA;
one to Australia and came to New Zealand.

James & Elizabeth MOORE's Children:

1. Elizabeth MOORE chr: 19 Feb 1809
2. Esther MOORE chr: 20 Jan 1811
3. James Copp MOORE chr: 1813
4. Sarah MOORE b: 1815
5. William Henry MOORE  b: 1818 m: Elizabeth GEMPTON b: 1818
6.  Elizabeth MOORE b: 1821
7.  Hannah MOORE chr: 27 Oct 1824

Would be most grateful for any info. or help with the above.

Thank you,
Tiffaney

William Henry Moore was my great-great-great grandfather.  He emigrated to NZ 1851/52.  He is in the 1851 census as living in Guersey but they had a child born in NZ in 1852. We have a pretty extensive family tree from when they arrived and settled in Okains Bay, Banks Peninsula, Canterbury NZ.   I'd love to know more about his parents James Moore and Elizabeth Moore (Copp)!  Thanks, Anna

Hi
I'm a little confused.
You say James came from the Isle of Man and was born 1775 but how do you know?
He married in Seaton in 1808 ,great ,all the children were baptised there so where odes the Isle of Man come in?
The 1851 census has James 86 widower gardener Teignmouth with son James age 36 ag lab born Beer and his family.
1841 James is ag lab age 75. y Devon
Burial 16.1.1852 age 86

Son James apprenticed 3.8.1825 to James Holmes farmer age 11
Son William 9yrs 6mths 28.4.1828 to Joseph Thorne yeoman of Seaton

It looks like Elizabeth died in 1828.
Burial 1.1.1828 age 40 of Beer.

Can't help wondering where the second name of 'Henry' for William comes from - every single record I look at has him as plain William, including the basic baptism(Devon), marriage (Guernsey) and death New Zealand??

Father James Moore - in 1851 census - is shown as born 'Tignnell' (not Teignmouth) ca.1765 but no such place seems to exist (although clearly written).   1841 Census does state he was a native of Devon.   When he married Elizabeth in 1808 he'd have been around 43 - unfortunately, marriage details do not show status for either of them.

Hi @Ciderdrinker, @Annette7 and @Rosie99
thanks for your feedback :) I'm a little new to this forum type thing so thanks for helping.  Our family history has always shown William Moore with a middle name Henry, which is interesting given it doesn't show on his records Annette7.
Ciderdrinker, thanks for the dates on Elizabeth Copp.
It's hard to access some data when living in NZ, there seem to be registers etc easy/free to access in UK but not available to us !!
Appreciate your help

is your Tignnell a misread Tignmth ie an abreviated Teignmouth ? census enumerators could be very cryptic

Moore is a common name  on IoM some families have a known Irish root
others possibly came from SW Lancashire as name common there eg in Liverpool (John Moore University)
and came over from 15th Cent as part of the Stanley forces when the Earls of Derby (based just outside Liverpool ) became Lords of Mann
any thing with a Manx Connection
