For starters my great great grandparents were living at 4 Norfolk Square, Portsea in 1881 - have you any shots of that?

Nothing specifically featuring that address, Phil'. But, I probably have some stuff giving a taste of the area. I know I have quite a lot of Queen St and the Hard, eg. Any good to ye?

Of course, dating the older stuff's a bit of a crap shoot. I'm sure our detective section could work most of it out. I just don't want to be flooding their board with pic's on spec'  :)

OK Steve, thanks for the reply - was worth asking  :)

Indeed. Always worth asking. No way I can catalogue / list the eclectic load of stuff I have here. But, I'll always take a look through, if I'm not Certain I don't have an image.

I suspect Hayling's out the window, by the way, because people couldn't walk there. This, I think, is why I have a lot of stuff from Southsea Beach to 'the back of the hill'. But, Hayling? Would've been a bit of a trek, humping one of those big, old cameras.

I do have a folder of aerial shots, some of which might clip Hayling. Only, I wouldn't know a Salt Pan if I saw one. And these are, obviously, later stuff.

Hi Steve,

Do you have any photos of St Mary's Church  from around 1829 - 1870? Have recently visited St Mary's but see from the history the church standing today is a different one to when my ancestors got baptised or married there.

Also St Mark's Church, North End from 1890?

Also, do you have any photos of old pubs?

Many thanks

Lisa; I've got some cracking stuff on St. Mary's :) I've got one or two of the old St. Marks too ~ Churches are a bit of a strong point in my collection.

Old pubs? I believe I have a few. Don't necessarily know where they stood though. There's a site dedicated completely to Portsmouth Pubs. Google that and it'll come up. I don't know if I have anything that guy hasn't got. Then there's Steven Pomeroy .....

Anyway, PM me an addy and I'll shoot ye over the churches  ;)

Hello SteveG,

I have been a member of Ancestry for yonks and have just found your thread.  It's a long shot but:

In 1861 my ancestor was a 'licensed victualler, at the 'Three Guns', 72, St. George Street, Portsea.

I had this from a Stephen Pomery; historian ages ago: "The Three Guns was a tied public house to Pike Spicer Brewery until it was bombed in 1940."

If you have a picture of same, I would be very grateful.

:( Sorry, Anna. I don't appear to have. Frustrating thing is though, I have dozens of pubs here which simply came with no name.

I've spent hours ~ and almost gone blind ~ peering at these shots. Trying to work out what an out of focus sign says. Even trying to figure out the location, from long ago memory, and see if I can remember the place and put a name to it myself.

Many I've managed. But, I still have as many again ~ some of the most fantastic old pubs. People in really old style clothes. Not a bloody clue where they are!  :-\

But, no. I've just stared at them all again, trying to see " 3 Guns " in anything. Can't see it. Sorry  :(

;D ;D ;D Lisa; Ye've just made my day! " Dairymans? " I thought. " No hope! " Dutifully cracked my way back into my folders and had a look. Ye don't wanna Know what I blurted out when I found the Gorgeous photo I'm about to send ye!  ;D

Sadly, no Newtown. But, this is why I like people to keep asking and I keep looking. I may blow out a dozen times. But, get someone that impossible shot? Bloody priceless!  ;)

Streets? I do have streets. But, work it out; How many streets / roads in Pompey? Ye can but ask ~ 99% of the time though I won't have anything. Why? Because few people went round taking shots of just any old road.

Queen St, Commercial Rd, Palmerston Rd? Places like that? Sure. But, Pitcroft Rd? No chance. People simply didn't photograph ordinary, residential streets  :(
